First, this is a great forum, Thank's!

Are there any god MP3 players for Win 3.11 that supports an external LCD display? Building a Car MP3 player and want to keep the OS as slim as possible. Can't use plain dos since the soundcard drivers only emulates 8 bit soundblaster. :( And Win95 takes to much time to boot and uses more disk and ram space.
(Using an old IBM Thinkpad.)
Thank's

Welcome to the 3.1 forum!

In your post at the DOS forum you wrote about your computer being a Thinkpad 380D.

What do u mean with an external LCD?
Not the LCD of the laptop itself I presume, because that one is supported of course.

Have you already checked the IBM site for drivers? They have plenty for all sort of Operating Systems....

Well if it is a ThinkPad 380D the DOS and Win3.1 drivers are in the same package, and according to specs:

http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=COBN-3H8CW3

it is 16bit audio so can use DOS software:

I know that there was a lot of discussion at the OBSOLETE COMPUTER HELPLINE about external MP3 players at one time. You may want to check in there.

Good luck

Hey,Wow! You really get response here!
Thank's alot. One questiopn, so it is possible to run damp or mpxplay in 3.11?
With LCD support I mean that I intend so hide the laptop in the rear end of the car and just having a small 2line LCD with breef info. and a small keypad. Both Damp and Mpxplayer has this kind of support and I don't whant to lose that.
I'll check that discussion that you wrote about!

No you need to run in DOS mode but with MXplay you can add a seperate front end see:

Also DOS takes a lot less of your hard drive space and it is easy to reinstall if you have problems.

Look's really nice but...still dos..
That's to bad, Then I'm still trapped with that lousy sounddriver of mine that only gives me 22,720KHz and 8-bit in DOS...
Guess I have to run a lited win 95 after all.
:( (Winplay works in win 3.1 but with no LCD support.) Thank's to a bad emulation of Sounblaster made by IBM. *Many hard words!)

In fact you can also blaim the coders of the DOS audio software that it only supports SoundBlaster, so maybe you can ask them for native support for you card!

I am not a fan of SoundBlaster cards myself but I think the real thing is better than the card you got with your IBM.

My favourite card is the Gravis Ultrasound PnP and luckily the DOS player I like most (XTC Player 0.97) has native support for it.

Well GUS seemes to be a great soundcard, it pops up in all sorts of software
configurations.
God news though! I'm allways been trying to use an emulated version of Sounblaster but with the same old problem, it's 8-bit and sound baaad! I read trough the manual files ones agin (10th time?) and fall onto a cryptic card called WSS.. AH! Windows Sound Support (or something like that). Well tell me about suprises, IT WORKS! Finaly the "(beep)" thing works! Hallelua!
Damp gives me pop's and hickups but MPXPLAYER
works great! My worries is over.. allmost.

Now I need to build a DC step-up booster so I
can get 16V 3A out of the car battery. Any one having a schematic on that? Don't want to use an altenator it's to noisy and it's makes it two step 12dc-> 220ac-> 12dc, that is a waste, though it's simple.

If I understand well then if you replace output in MPXPlay from Soundblaster to WSS it results in 16-bit output?

IŽll try this on other (non true Soundblaster compatible) soundcards too and hopefully it works!

Thanks for the suggestion.

Ok!
A big "THANK YOU!" to all of you that kindly
tried to help me out of my mess. I've been out on a great hollyday and had lot's of good
music from my lap thank's to you all!
Yes, WSS turned it on to 16 bit, I've also tried this on an older P75 laptop with similar problem with bad sounding 8-bit sound and... TADAAA! It worked! Though it turned out to take much more CPU usage but it worked! HA! Have a nice day all of you and again, Thank's!
