This 3.11 machine was working fine until I connected to the internet with AOL 3.0. I did get on the internet, sent one email and viewed one web page. then AOL upgraded some .utf files, which I had no choice about. then the mouse started jumping around on the page. i did a scandisk and now there is no mouse cursor. i do have the scanundo floppy, but don't know how to use it. where do i start? susan

do you have a serial or ps/2 mouse?
how much memory? whats the size of your hard drive? how much free space you have?
how much memory, type of processor?
If you have an ancient machine, your mouse freezes because you are short on memory and have no space left on your hard drive. Or you did not shut down your pc properly and the mouse driver dissapeared after reboot.
Aol 3.0 runs like molasses on my 486dx with windows 3.11. Give it some time before you say that the mouse dissapeared. I had to use Opera to improve performance, I simply log in on AOL 3.0 but use the Opera web browser which gives you a performance boost.
Sorry for my bad grammar.

Hi dude, thanks for responding. I came back to post that i'd read the msdos help file re scandisk undo, ran the undo from the floppy i'd made to no avail. the mouse still didn't work. then i got really brave and after figuring out how to get to a dos prompt with keyboarding, shut down the computer and plugged another mouse in and it worked!!

to answer your questions, it's a ps/2 mouse, i have a 504mb hd, 60mhz pentium with 8mb of ram and 289mb of free space.

what i want to do is get this machine running with aol because that's what my mom likes and it's for her. is this feasible with this machine? she would be doing minimal browsing and mostly email and playing solitaire with it; and hopefully, I can put MS hearts on it too. I think I better get the 66 floppys and backup the system before i do anything else. Although, there is a lot of junk I'd like to delete like quicken, I don't know how to do this on this machine, yet. i'm using win95b and know nothing about win3.11 and very little about dos. susan

you should be fine running aol 3.0 on that machine. However, the measly 8 mb of memory means that your pc will use the hard drive page file as memory, and AOL needs about 16 mb to run right. It will run very slow, your mouse might freeze from time to time. I am glad you were able to make your mouse work. If you need to delete quicken, on windows 3.11 there is no add remove programs in control panel like windows 95b has. So what I usually did was simply delete the files and the links to them in program manager. No damage was done and I did clean my hard disk. However, you have plenty of hard drive space (289mb) so this is not a must . For freecell you can go to download.com, they offer a lot of windows 3.1 games and apps. Good Luck.

dude, it is veeery slow running aol!! i talked to crucial.com re adding ram and i'd have to buy 2 32mb SIMMS for $90.00!! maybe i should run aol 2.0. this machine came with 2.0. do you have any idea what those mandatory upgrades in AOL with an extension .utf are? is it spyware? sounds like I should check out Opera as a browser. thanks for the help! susan

go to ebay.com, to buy 2 memory sticks for your pentium 60. But it is a good idea to check crucial.com for the specs on your machine so you buy the right one. As far as aol 2.0, I found it as aol 2.0 for UK in the set up files of windows 95 b. You can use it with lots of limitations, but if all you want to do is check email, it will be fine. The UTF files can be avoided if you log off the system by simply disconnecting your modem, do not even click log off, that is when the utf files are downloaded. I have no idea what the utf files are, I believe that they are updates but not really sure. They did not harm my ancient 486dx machine in any way. Hope this helps.
