If it's not a case of a gummed up roller, then it could be a broken wire in the mouse's 'tail' - you're sure the mouse is good and that you have the proper Win driver installed?

If it works in DOS (both vertically and horizontally) then you can pretty much rule out a blown serial/PS2 port. Also check to make sure it's not one of the types that have something like a "MS/PC" switch on the bottom. If it does, change the switch and see if that helps (I used to think that "MS" meant "Micro$oft"---instead of "Mouse Systems")

Yes - if it's a 3-button mouse you may have a switch for 2-button(PC) or 3-button(MS) mode.

Certainly testing in DOS would rule out mechanical, dirt or port problems - but if the Win driver is incorrect, that might cause odd behaviour as well.

If it is a broken wire - hasta la vista - time for a new one.

i have opened it and it looks clean and nothing looks broke. it does have the MS/PC button on it. i have it on PC but when i change to MS, it freakes out. it does move horizontly but not in a usefull sence. you just move it a little and it goes all over the place. especially in the top, left hand corner.

Well, you wouldn't see a bad wire - they're hair thin and can break quite easily if the mouse falls off of your desk (for instance).

See if it works in DOS.

Does the mouse have a brandname, like Genius© or Logitech© etc?

What Windows driver did you select?

how would i check it in dos? i moved the serial ribbon to com 2/4 on the mobo and i selected mouse system on com 2 in the windows setup. and still nothing. the brand of the mouse is Keen. i havent found any info for it online. wait, during scandisk, i moved the mouse but it still only went up and down. than again it freaked out after switching to MS on the mouse.

You'd test it under DOS by installing a DOS mouse driver - there are scads of general drivers available, but you might try CuteMouse.

Flipping the mouse switch while the computer is running may cause the mouse not to be recognized for that session - you may need to reboot - so maybe leave it at the 2-button or original setting.

Changing the serial connection is also likely not a great idea - try and stick to one configuration.

If you have a generic 'no name' mouse, then probably you might try a different Windows driver like Logitech. You can run Windows setup from the DOS prompt:

cd\windows

setup

and choose a different mouse driver - may need to experiment a bit - unless, of course, the mouse is actually bad.
