Comment: I recently purchased a Rockwell 33.6Kbps modem, and I am in need of a driver to make it functional. The model # of the driver is RC336ACFA. I am despiratly seeking this driver, or a generic driver that will make this modem functional. Either Email me with the location of this driver, or post on the board. Thank you

Reply: (edit)If you had bought a hardware (ISA) modem, then you wouldn't need a driver at all... Does anyone know of (the existence) of good hardware PCI modems? Or is it true all these PCI cards are cheap trash? Cheap hardware replacing valuable hardware is a trend that started with PCI and now we all see it happening with USB (yuk;-) too! The only good PCI cards for me are the videocards....

Reply: (edit)That appears to be a Rockwell chip number, but you need the modem makers name and model number. See google search: http://www.google.ca/search?q=%2BRockwell+%2BRC336ACFA&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search look on the card for a FCC ID#, then use google to find one of the many links to the FCC ID tables

Reply: (edit)I *SO* agree with Soedesh it isn't even funny! Just get an actual hardware modem and you'll never have to worry about it; any generic modem driver will do as long as it's got actual hardware to talk to. A friend of mine insists that 3Com/US Robotics actually makes a decent hardware PCI modem. This may be true, but I can't vouch for it as I haven't used it.

Reply: (edit)I will never throw away/sell these modems I have: -Internal Etech Bullet ISA v90 modem. -External US Robotics SERIAL v90 modem When I bought it the Etech was 56k6 Flex, but upgrading to v90 was easy and free. Although USRobotics support sucks I managed to update the external modem (with software from a Swedish USR webside) from X2 to V90. The official USR website wanted to charge me 60 (maybe even 90) dollar for that. I purchased the modem brandnew and boxed for about 40 USD, so the charge for upgrading was/is absurd. Also the box stated: Upgradeble to V.90. I thought this upgrade was free, because the Etech upgrade was... My advice: Dont throw away usefull old hardware. Many times they are even better then new hardware, especially with modems....

Reply: (edit) The Driverzone has several PCI drivers in their archives although most are for Win95. They also have links to Rockwell's site and a link to FCC ID.

Reply: (edit)The modem I have is also a Rockwell 33.6, but I didn't need any special Win 3.1 drivers for it. In Win95, I had to use the AOpen 33.6 modem drivers, but both Win98 and Win3.1(with IE5) detected it as a Rockwell 33.6. IE 3 didn't detect it, but it worked with the Standard modem driver. It also works fine in DOS. (with Arachne) What program are you planning to use with it? I would think all you need to do is enter the COM and IRQ settings into the program you are using. (That's how mine works anyway, yours could be different)

Reply: (edit)I am going to use IE 5.01 with this modem. I found the driver on driverzone, and thanks to Tom for telling me where to get it. Even modem-drivers.com did not have it. Thank you. I finally am able to use this modem after 2 weeks of searching for a driver for it. (of course, the way you are talking about Rockwell, I may just take it back and get a real modem). Thanks though.

Reply: (edit)RE k_semler Install the Internet Explorer 5.0 16bit. It includes Outlook Express, Microsoft VM for Java, the Dial up network and the automatic modem detection and configuration.
