Comment:

someone accidentally deleted command.com from my sys and now it cant boot. If I took a dos 6.22 disk and sys my drive. it place a command.com but still wont boot correctly. All it does is boot up with the date like normal dos boot up. It wont load windows. How do I make it boot up and load windows automatically?

Sounds like you have lost your autoexec.bat and possibly your config.sys file as well.

First of try typeing

CD WINDOWS and press enter

then

WIN and press enter

to see if your Windows files still exsist?

Come back and let me know.

Also check that you have a \DOS Directory as well, as you will need the DOS files to create new autoexec & config files.

ok.. i can load windows if i boot up with my dos disk and under c:\windwos i type win and it came up. but trying to boot just without boot disk its still dosnt come up. I need to know what should i type in the autoexec and config to get this going. btw under c:\ there's a DOS directory as well. I'm not sure whats all the command lines and path to type in for the autoexec and config. Thanks ANNON!

Same thing.
edit autoexec.bat
add as the last line:

win

save and exit

but if your autoexec.bat and config.sys got deleted you may have to recreate them for things to work right.
You'll need at least a path statement in autoexec.bat

path=c:\dos;c:\windows

(and prob'ly other lines as well)

You did copy command.com from a: to c: ?

Ben - it's 6.22 (I think)

Chewy, in config.sys:

device=c:\dos\himem.sys
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe RAM
dos=high,umb

DOS622 has a copy of himem.sys (1994), and Win31 has a copy as well (1992) - might as well use the DOS one, not much difference, as long as it gets loaded correctly.

This will set up memory management for your system - which will make Win3xx happy.
You might need to set up your mouse, too, at least for DOS:

autoexec (usu):

lh c:\mymouse\mymouse.com

(wherever and whatever your mouse driver is)
It never hurts to back up your autoexec and config files (just in case)

;-)

2 things:
i) If you start a fresh post, you'll get more responses
ii) This is the Win31 page, the Win9x page would be better...

.. actually 3 things

iii) Why did you think removing an essential file (command.com) would be an improvement??
Try booting from A: and then do the copy; copy is a function of command.com... and since it's not where it's supposed to be...
Not trying to be mean, but seriously - think about these things before you go ahead and do them. The "something else" you deleted might be causing probs as well. If you can boot from your install disk, just do that and go ahead and install Win98 - it'll take care of the rest.

I have the same problem with command.com being deleted from a win98 PC. Used sys C: from a boot floppy to restore key system files. PC will boot but wont start win98, just goes to a c:\> prompt. can CD to \windows and type win. Get the HIMEM.sys not found, but it is in windows directory. Since you guys knew solution to similar problem under win3x, thought I give you a shot for win98. Know this isnt win98 group though. Can you help? Thanks.
