making progress,still not there(win3.1 install)

hi again,i still cant get win3.1 installed on this old compaq 286 laptop.i did get d.o.s 6.0 installed.now when i try to install win 3.1 i get a message saying that XMS not installed.i did go into the config sys and type in himem.exe and so on.the next time i re-start the computer it still says XMS NOT INSTALLED.DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO INSTALL WIN3.1 ON A COMPAQ LTE286 WITH DOS 6.2 MY HAD DISK IS 20 MB PLEASE HELP

john, you should be able to install windows 3.1 without "xms". xms is your high memory i.e. your extra RAM. since your computer is a 286, it probably has extra RAM, but cannot use xms as it is meant for a 386 and up. when you run windows after it's installed, make sure you type "win /s", which means start windows in standard mode (not enhanced mode).
