I have an ibm 486dx with dos 5.0 and win3.11. Somehow setup.exe got deleted or something, anyway it's missing according to the pc. When I start up the pc I get the message-"Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows in 386 enhanced mode. You may need to run setup program again. lvmd.386. Press any key to continue.
I press a key, it goes to Windows. When I click Windows setup, I get the message-"File Error. Cannot find LZEXPAND>DLL. Clicked close in this error window and got message-"Application Execution Error!Cannot find file setup.exe (or one of it's components). Check to ensure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available. (Do not know how to do this!!!)
I went into file manager, setup.exe file/folder is there, when I click on it I get !Cannot Run Program. Cannot find file (or one of it's components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available. I Get this message for other applications, too. How can I fix this? Do I need to reinstall Windows 3.11, since I don't know which and how many files are lost? ON the other hand, this pc has 16MB RAM and a 529MB hard drive. Can I get rid of win3.11 and put in win98?(no cd-rom, though)-Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated!!!-TCGary

Yes you need to reinstall windows 3.11

If you install windows 98 with 16MB ram you will be a little slow. 32 would be better.

Windows 95 works better with 16MB.

tc, yes you can install windows 98, but the minimum requirements are a 486dx2-66, and even on that machine, it will run at a snail's pace (have tried it myself!). the extra RAM is quite necessary as well, as windows 98 is quite memory-hungry (much more so than windows 95, and of course, windows 3.1x).

windows 95 OSR (original release) or 95a would be your best bet. then you could just download the patches available on the net. i find it's a nice compromise compared to later versions (b & c), as it's not so bloated and doesn't clog up your computer with as many device drivers and stuff behind the scenes.

i had a 386sx-25 with 8 megs of ram which i stuck windows 95 OSR onto, and though i kept it bare-bones (just a web browser & some games), i found it worked great (for a 386).
