I realise that this question has been asked here many times...but Im still not clear about this.
Is there a patch for win3.11/DOS6.22 to allow long file name support????????????

Sure would be nice if it were so!

Thanks,

Calmira (a windows 3.11 program manager replacement) provides long file names via the descipt.ion file format. This is not compatible with the win9X long file name support. There is also a program called Instant File Access that provides descript.ion support for browse boxes. There is also a program that you can run on your windows 9X/ME system that will create descript.ion files for your entire hard drive. It does not to the reverse however.

There are several DOSes that support windows 9X Long File Names. One is ROMDOS (www.datalight.com). There are two utilities that provide shells with LFN support. LFNDOS.exe and DOSLFN.exe.

Hope that helps,
-Michael

You can check here:

for a "debate" over the relative merits of various LFN tools, and where to get them. *g*

Don't forget, WinZip 6.3 (for Win31) supports long filenames within a Zipfile.

Michael, i checked out ROMDOS site. It
looks interesting....would be worth trying
to run WinCE on a pc. But, can i run
Win3.11? (w/32 support).

jboy, thanks for the link. Truely a debate! I
came to the conclusion that I would need
to try them all to figure out what works and
what does not.
Im glad you reminded me about winzip. If
I need to get a batch of files over to the
Win3.11 machine...just zip it and send it
over...unzip it...wallah!

N1, I downloaded BSCAT. When I run
cat.exe, there is a flash of a screen
w/text...real fast...and nothing happens.
When I run the other exe, I get a "screen
saver" effect. I noticed that in the doc file, it
lists a slightly different package then what
is on the zip.
Looks like an interesting solution...but I
need to install it to find out!
Do you or anyone that has installed this, have any suggestions????

Thanks,
_______steven

Yeah, for basic file management, WinZip may be the simplest route - plenty of things to check out tho'

ROM-DOS will run Windows 3.X without any modifications on a FAT 32 partition. However, the long file names are unfortunately not supported by Windows 3.11. I don't think it would be that difficult for the folks at Calmira to add Long File Name support for windows 3.X. But you have to ask yourself what would be the point? With the descript.ion file support it really does have long file name support, albeit incompatible with MS win9X LFNs. Although it would be nice, at this point it's gravy. As for running Windows CE on a PC, it would be very, very cool! Although you'd have to be a developer I think to even get an installation 'copy' of the OS. I have only seen CE preinstalled into ROM on handheld devices, never on an actual disk, CD or any other form of useable media.

ROM-DOS as well is 'very' costly to get as a regular o/s. Only the boot disk (eval version) is available and that has a "press ESC to contine.." message. I contacted them and was told in the next few months there will be a official version for sale (single user license) for a cut down price...
