To make and install the Splash Screen:

--Open the image you want to use in an image editing program such as Paint Shop Pro.

--Reduce the number of colors to 16, if necessary (see hints).

--Save the file to the RLE format. Use a name other than vgalogo.rle or use a directory other than windows\system.

--Check the size of the file new RLE file using file manager or DOS.
If the file size is greater than 47608 bytes, go back to the image editor and reduce the size of the image, save and check the file size again. Keep adjusting the image size until the file is smaller than 49,500 bytes.

--Copy your RLE file over vgalogo.rle in the windows\system directory. If you think you may want to change back to the Windows logo, copy the old vgalogo.rle to a different name first.

--Exit Windows and change directory to windows (cd \windows).

--Type "setup" to run the windows setup program.

--Move the selection up to the video driver line. Note the current setting and press Enter.

--Select the same driver from the list displayed, and close setup, clicking OK to save changes.

--Start Windows again; your new image should be displayed while the software is loading.

Hints:

--Use your imaging software to check the number of colors in your original image. You may need to click on Image then Count Colors.

--Click on Image then Reduce Color Depth or equivalent, and choose 16 colors.

--Your software may give you several options; if available, use Optimized Pallette and Error Diffusion. Experiment with the various options until you get the best 16 color image.
Once your image is reduced to 16 colors, it can be saved in RLE format. Click File then Save As and choose RLE Windows format.

VGALOGO.RLE may contain the Windows 3.1 Startup Logo, But if you delete it it will not go away. It is incoded into WIN.EXE! Doofus has it about right on how to change it..

topz (and anyone else interested...), here is a link where you can download a program called "winlogo"; this will change your windows 3.1x & wfwg 3.1x start-up screen for you. all you need to do is come up with some new screens. he includes one as a sample, if you read the paragraph.

the file is near the bottom of that page.
