What are the specs on the laptop? Are you sure that it is powerful enough to run Win 95? What did you mean by one drive at a time? You should start by formating the hard drive. If you know what brand of hard drive, you can usually go to their web site and download a utility to help with that. Then you can use the boot disk and load Win 95 clean. You should check this site for other info about formating hard drives before you do it.

First, your laptop has to have at least 8mb of RAM memory, and it won't work well with that little. 16mb should be fine if you aren't in a hurry. Your hard drive needs to have at least 150mb of free space also. If you don't have a built in CD-Rom, you'll need to copy the Win95 directory over to the laptop's hard drive using laplink or interlnk and a data connection cable.

Now, assuming you have a working CD-ROM or have Win95 setup files already in your hard drive, here's what to do:

1. Use the win95 boot disk to boot up the laptop with CD-ROM support if you need it.

2. Once you get to a DOS prompt, change directory to the correct place where the Win95 install files are.

cd d:\win95
This should work for most CD-ROMs

cd c:\win95
This should work if your install files are on your hard drive in the win95 directory.

Then run "setup"

If it balks because you have an old version of Windows already installed, you'll need to erase your old Windows directory:

deltree c:\windows

or change directory into the c:\windows
directory and erase using this command:

erase *.*

Then try setup again after the old Windows is gone.

Excuse me i disagree with that, i have my laptop with 4 ram and 33mhz with Windows 95 it goes slow but can handle word internet mirc and msn messenger also old dos games. you don't need 150 the 50 is for internet explorer 4.0 if you want, if you use 95a you can get it under 40megs buy for 95b you use around 80 or something. i know windows 95 takes up 85.mb of my hardrive i have a 200mb hardrive with 70mb left

Oooooohhhh. So nitpickey!!! Brandon didn't say he wanted to suffer a miserable computing life.

Yes, Win95 will run with 4mb of RAM and you'll want to shoot yourself using it. Even Win95A will crawl along like a snail with only 4mb and you'll have to use a memory manager like RAMPage just to keep the thing going. Sure, old DOS games will work but why run Win95 to use old DOS games?

And as for hard drive space, if you plan to load any serious software, you'll need 150mb of drive space. Otherwise you'll run out of storage space quickly.

If you're out to set some kind of record or simply hate yourself, 4mb of RAM with a 50mb drive will suit your needs if you don't plan to do a damn thing with your laptop except run old DOS stuff. If you're trying to actually do some computing, shoot for 12mb and up with at least a 200mb drive.
