Comment:

I have an "SB16 Value" (CT2770) running under Windows 3.11. The digital audio is fine, however the MIDI is not.
Whenever I try to enable the following line in config.sys, to enable the MIDI driver, the computer just crashes at that point during startup:
DEVICE=C:\SB16\CTMIDI.DRV
Because of this, I cannot get any MIDI working through Windows.

Also, whenever I try to run a DOS game in Windows, Windows pops up a message saying "Unable to play sound - The Sound Blaster is in use by another application". Windows seems to be hogging the sound card and not letting any other app's use it.

If anybody could let me know what the jumpers do on my "SB16 Value", I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance!!

Do you have the correct drivers? They can be downloaded from Creative here:

http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/drivers

Windows 3.1x drivers are listed amongst the DOS drivers. Two files are available for the SB16: sbbasic.exe and s16dw3up.exe.

There is a basic diagram of the SB16 giving jumper settings here:

You dont need to enable creative dos drivers for an isa creative card to work in windows 31...soundblasters use windows drivers , both for audio and midi...of course for dos you'd need them...you need to find a windows driver compatible with your card, (pyran has posted the most likely compatible drivers above...) and you need to make sure your interrupts on the board are not conflicting with other apps (5 is the usual interrupt , if the board is set to 7 instead it sometimes could cause probs...)
AI'd also suggest you rem out the autoexec.bat settings before installing those drivers, and install sbbasic first, then 16dw3up after....

The next thing you might want is better midi sound, because standard FM midi synthesis which comes with the SB 16 is very poor.
If you can find midi only (daughter)boards from Yamaha or Turtlebeach you will experience a lot of improvement.....

Another option for better midi is a complete replacement of the SB 16. Good replacement cards are the Gravis Ultrasound PnP (with 8 Mb RAM and 5.2 Mb Wavetable), the Terratec Maestro, Maxisound Homestudio, Turtlebeach cards, Ensoniq cards etc.....
