Comment:

Hi! I have an old computer on which I use to have Win98 (use to work fine). I decided to install Win 3.0 just to take a look at it, for fun.

The install seemed to work fine. At the end the system rebooted and I got that message :

Invalid system disk
Replace the disk and then press any key.

I tried to boot on a win98 boot disk and type :
c:
cd windows
win

I get this :
You started your computer with a version of MS-DOS incompatible with this version of Windows. Insert a disquette matching this version of Windows and restart.

So I tried with a DOS 6.22 boot disk and got this :
Invalid drive specification

I'm stuck there, nothing to do. The system won't start. I don't quite understand why it does that. I'd like to know the reason of that.

Thanks...

did you install windows 3.0 in the same directory as windows 98? if you did.....your ****ed. just re-install 98. windows 3.0 just over-written your windows 98 system files. if you install 98 again, all your programs and shortcuts anf favorites will still be there.

when you tryed to install win 3.0 did you do a fdisk and format?
If im not mistaken win 3.0 would use fat 16 while win 98 is usually on fat 32.

You have to be sure your boot win98 is same version as one on hdd, likely can not mix win98 with win98se

Yes I've formated before. That must be the problem.

Is there a possibility to format the hdd in FAT16 file system? Is there a tool I could use for that?

What about if I boot on a boot disk formated in FAT16? How could I get that?

FAT32 is not supported by W3.x or DOS. You need to format again:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;255867

then install DOS then W3.x, W3.x is not a standalone O/S

For your information
(This has been posted here many times in the past)

Windows 3x will work on a FAT16 or 32 partion. Your problem is with Windows 98 since Microsoft in thier wisdom desided to block Windows 3x by rewriting IO.SYS in MS-DOS 7.10 (It worked OK with Win95/MS-DOS 7.0)

You can intall and run Windows 3.1 under MS-DOS 7.10 & FAT32 if you patch IO.SYS with 3XSTART which is available on my site (The link is just above - Look on the Win3x or 9x Pages)

Run 3XSTART - A simple patch to IO.SYS.
(This is intended mainly for Windows 3.1)

Install Windows 3.1 to a differant directory (Say Win31)

ONLY use a Temporary Swop File.

Both versions of windows will now run on a FAT32 Drive - But not at the same time!

For anyone who wants the advantage of useing a FAT32 Drive larger than 2GB with Large Disk Support (The MS-DOS 6.22 FAT16 Limit) and Windows 3.1 as a standalone system without Windows 98 I also have a patched MS-DOS 7.10 Bootdisk for this purpos, Which is also HEX edited to read MS-DOS 7.10 by the way (Available on my Bootdisk Project Page)

Now I got the FAT16 partition all right. But still got problems trying to install DOS.

I got different versions of DOS (4,5,6) and I tried with different diskettes and still the same message. So I boot on the first diskette (on which there is a SETUP.exe or INSTALL.exe file) and I always get this :

Invalid system disk
Replace the disk and then press any key.

Why so?

Thank you.

Where did you get your DOS from? Are they downloaded from ZIP files. If so they are not bootable, even if they have setup on them.

All my Bootdisks (as are Bootdisk.Com) are Image files that write the Boot Image of DOS correctly.

Thanks to all. Well finaly I got some DOS disks that work, and it was some images like you say Mick C. I imagine that was the problem.

And to be able to install DOS I had to format with the /u parameter. If not, it was like if there was already a DOS version (there were none) probably because of some hidden files on the disk. It worked fine after I did format with the /u parameter.

Thanks...
