Just make sure that you don't use a Winmodem. For the most part, these don't work in Win 3.1. There were a few early Winmodems that had drivers made for Win 3.1 but they didn't work very well.

I think that just about any hardware modem should work with Win 3.1. If nothing else you could install it as a standard modem. External, serial port modems will work well.

Look at Q9 under this link:

Unless you've tinkered with the port settings in Control Panel, then just about any generic external modem should work on the serial port. A lot of internal "hardware-only" modems should work as well, but will need some jumper settings verified to work in Win3.1. After you get the modem up and running (use Terminal to test it out), then you should be able to find MSIE 3.03 (w/dialer) for Win3.1 here:

http://ns1.tusc.net/pub/dlful30f.exe

Install it and configure your ISP settings. Then find a more suitable browser such as Opera 3.62 or Netscape 3.x to use (Opera is a 30 day demo, Netscape is free), since IE 3.x is pretty much useless. You'll get a lot of java script errors in Netscape, so turn it off (Options-Network Preferences-Languages)...

Netscape 3.04 (Standard):
http://ns1.tusc.net/pub/n16e304.exe

Opera 3.62:
ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/comm/ow362e16.exe

I'm not sure if this will help...but...try my FTP/Hotline site...I got some modem drivers that I found on the floor on thrift stores...:P

FTP: ftp://tsfc.homeftp.net
Hotline: hotline://tsfc.ath/cx
(both addresses point 2 the same IP...and both have the same files)

I hope that helps...;)

Like T-R-A said, if you use an internal hardware modem, you'll need to use the proper jumper settings. Usually you should use Com 2 and IRQ 3. You will also need to disable Com 2 in the Bios, and set Com 2 at the highest speed in the Win 3.x control panel. Once installed correctly, the setup for IE 3.03 will detect it.

If you need help installing IE 3.03, look in my Browsers section.
