Hello,

I looked about on winxp the other day and it says (i think i read it correctly) that it could share an internet connection though serial cable. As the only way for my win3.1 pc can conect to the internet is though a network card on my docking station i was really wanting to have something more mobile (hah) :)

So my question is can i share my winxp connection to a win3.11 pc using a serial cable?

Thanks

It is feasible to use RAS with NT4, maybe this will work with XP if you have the Professional Version?

You will need a "Null Modem Serial Cable":

Update:

I have done the win3.1 bit
I have got up to the windows nt (nt5 in my case).

And i am stuck, i know the page is different from nt5 version and i know what to do, it is when it detects the modem for computer to computer link. well, if i detect automatically, it doesent find the serial cable (com1) but if i do it manually its fine so i dont know about that, but when i get to adding the network, i do it all fine but when it is suppost to ask of which device to use (i have 3, My built in InFra Red port, my pcmcia modem and the serial link). But it doesent ask for any and tries to assume i want the ir port. i have tried to disable the port in the bios but the windows driver is already installed and its a microsoft auto install with windows driver (plug and play in other words).

Thats my problem!

Can someone please tell me how to get it to point to the serial link modem? :)

Update 2:

I swapped win2000 for a winxp hard drive and got going with that. i set up the xp as follows:

New Connection,
Set up advanced connection,
Connect directly to another computer,
Guest,
Chose COM1 (Serial Cable Between to computers).

I then tried for hours to get the 2 pcs to interact.
For this is all that happened:

I got the remote access service started up on the win3.11 lappy,
I dialled with the winxp lappy.

After a while the xp lappy displayed authenticating username and password and at the same time the win3.11 lappy displayed
authenticating caller!

As you can see clearly here:

The win3.11 lappy is obviously recieving the attempts from the xp lappy each time it redials. Indeed, here it looks like it is giving a responce to the xp lappy, yet...

The xp lappy displays this rather disapointingly:

Can someone please tell me why this is happening and not to ignore my plea :)

Would it not be easier rather than double posting, just to get a 16bit PCMCIA Network Card which has WfW3.11 Drivers?, you will also need "Card and Sockets Software" to enumerate the PCMCIA Chipset.

no, i dont think it would be. Because i would still have to link it to another pc. Plus i avoid using the pcmcia for win3.1 because of the software is not free.
Whereas i have all the hardware that i need and without extra payment either
