Here's another stupid question... Searched the forums and couldn't find an answer, so...
I've got two computers hooked up to a linksys router, sharing a home network as well as DSL. One box is running WinXP Pro and the other has multiple boots, including WFW 3.11. My question:
I have the 3.11 box hooked up to the network and sharing internet with only one problem: I can only access the internet if I turn of DHCP support and specify an IP address (that's how the other computer and boots are set up) - I can only access the other computers on the network if I enable DHCP. (this may be backwards - I'm not at home at the moment)
I have TCP/IP in the 3.11 box, user account set up on the XP box, etc, etc.
Is there a SNAFU on my part? Just curious, as having to restart Windows to switch between file sharing and internet access is annoying. =)
Thanks.

I am right XP is the gateway to the internet? If so you should set this machine up for Internet Connection Sharing in the Network Wizard, therefore all other O/S's should be switched to DHCP and file and printer and internet sharing should theoretically happen with no further configuring of TCP/IP!
With WfW 3.11 have you got installed the lastest TCP/IP stack, the file is called 'tcp32b' http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;99891
Good luck

I have file and printer sharing set up on all OSes - I Also have TCP32B installed on WFW.
The Linksys router acts the default gateway (therefore - to my understaning - XP is out of the loop as far as the internet goes).
E.G.
Default gateway:
192.168.1.1 - the router
192.168.1.2 - the XP box
192.168.1.3 - the WFW boxWhile DHCP enabling still allows for internet and file sharing in the other OSes, in WFW it's DHCP for file sharing and Assigned IP for internet - one or the other...
Any thoughts?

Have you tried taking DHCP out of the loop and assigning them all staticic 192 etc with a subnet 255.255.255.000 & WORKGROUP.
Also have you tried mapping the drives in a DOS/Command Prompt box on the non WfW O/S's. Using Network Client 3.O with the server add-on in DOS6.22, XP sees the DOS PC as a peer server in "My Network Places" but access denied, I have to map the DOS PC drives in XP's Command Prompt Box, therefore they now will show up in "My Computer"
Good Luck www.mwpms.uklinux.net

I know exactly what your problem is- its the Linksys! Ive got one too, and have a multiboot situation with w31 on one partition and the linksys seems to refuse to work with any sort of dynamic host config. After headache after frustration after frustration i tried a couple switches that a friend let me try out and it worked fine on all of them- only the linksys refused to perfiorm normally.
Until i can afford a different hub or , preferably, a switch, im just going with the single line out to the net, and im just using direct cable between my boxes , ive stuffed the linksys off in the closet.
My advice- try a different router, or switch.
I dont know why it would be the way it is, the guy i got the linksys off of had no prob, but systems have so many variables that nothings ever guaranteed.
LOL
