I have an old laptop with a PC Card 33.6 Kbps modem. I was wondering if there was a free ISP that is compatible with Win 3.1. I checked Netzero.com, but they provide software for only Win 95 and up.
It doesn't depend on the Internet Server. It depends on the software you use. What I remember is that there was a software, Trumpet Winsock, for Windows 3.1, that allowed you to connect to the Internet. You only need the ISP's phone number, the username and the password.
you can try internet explorer 3.03 do a google search for it ( i got it but don't remember from where !) it comes with the shiva dialer you need to know the DNS server address ( or whatever it is called )of your ISP in addition to the phone number user name and pass word
You can also get IE 5.0, which MS made available for free. This includes IE 5.0, Outlook Express, and a TCP/IP stack plus a dialer program. It is quite nice, and likely the most modern browser you will find for Win 3.x.
If you hunt around at tucows (http://classic.tucows.net) you should be able to find it.
Once installed, as long as you have an existing dialup ISP account, you are "good to go".
You only need the ISP's phone number, the username and the password.
That doesn't work with NetZero. Alot of the new ISP's require you to have their software installed. When you dial into their servers it checks for their software before it lets you connect. I have tried many times with many dialup ISP's and so far only found two that would work.
One was Earthlink "type ELN/username : pass & phone #. the other was ispwest which works using simple DUN. No software required.
