Hi,

I need help with my VMware Workstation Version 4.00.
I made a virtual machine (MS-Dos) and installed succesfully MS-Dos 6.22 without the specialdisk #4. After this I installed my Windows 3.1 and it works.
Yet I found a newer version of Windows, exactly Windows for Workgroups 3.11 german. The OS is still working on a AMD K5 133 MHz, but when i install it I got the message: "VM attempting to execute in undefined memory."

Can anybody help me with this problem ? I want to use the bridged networking with the AMD PCNet Adapter which is only included in WFWG 3.11.

Thanks a lot - SiyMan (Germany)

Have you tried to install MS-DOS 7.10 under VMWare environment yet? In my experience, MS-DOS 6.22 has compatiblity issues in some environment. For example, in VMware, the USB drivers for my 128MB USB Flash Disk (which is connected to the USB Port of VMWare) doesn't work under MS-DOS 6.22 (simply hangs after loading, and Ctrl+Alt+Del has no effect), but works perfectly under MS-DOS 7.10. Also, unlike MS-DOS 7.10 installer, the installer for MS-DOS 6.22 is *very* lazy since it does not create/format partitions if not done yet. MS-DOS 7.10 Instatllation Set has been carefully tested under VMWare 4.0 and with Win3.x by now, so it should work fine with them without any changes.

Hey it works, I get a new error message =(.

EMM has detected error #01 in an application at memory adress 3002:0048. To minimize the chance of data loss, EMM386 has halted your computer.
For more information, consult your documentation.

To restart your computer, Press ENTER.

I love it. Itīs possible that i have an codepageconflict ? German Windows 3.11 WFWG and englisch Dos 7.10 ? Or canīt work Win 3.11 with Fat 32 ?

Tanks a lot - SiyMan

So, DOS works now, right?

I have never tested the German version of WFW 3.11 before, but it should not be a problem unless the German version of WFW 3.11 does require the German version of DOS.

FAT32 is not a problem of any kind. Win3.11 should even work better on FAT32 drives than FAT16 drives, except for the fact that the permanent swap file can't be created on FAT32 drives.

P.S. you can try remove or comment out the reference to EMM386.exe in CONFIG.SYS, and see if that message disappears.

BTW: You mean that EMM386 message appears when you start your German Version of WFW 3.11 or when you quit from it? Also, did you install your German Version of WFW 3.11 after installing the English version of DOS 7.1 or before it?

No, no !

My Problem is the "setup.exe" file from WFWG Disk 1. If I start this file, I get the message or the PC is halting.
I think that the german version donīt make confilcts cause I have tested an english version on the german Dos 6.22 (Add-ON Dik installed) and it propably works.

Now I will test the system without loading EMM386, the reason is coming close ...

And when I want to execute setup.exe on Virtual PC I got the error message: CPU error: incorrect opcode. Killing process.

And than the pc halted ...

So, you mean your German version of WFW 3.11 installer works neither on DOS 6.22 nor on DOS 7.10, and the error message appears basically at the same time (i.e. when you execute SETUP for WFW 3.11). Probably some files of your German WFW 3.11 are corrupt. Please check your files then.

You get the point =).

The installation doesnīt work with Dos 6.22, 6.2 or 7.10. But my version of Windows 3.1 german works. I can install it, but I must start it with the parameter /s for non 386 process.
My Diskettes arenīt corrupt cause Iīve installed WFWG 3.11 on my 133 K5 a few days before.

In Response #5 and #6, you finally told me what you mean. Therefore, I'm quite sure that this problem is unrelated to any version of DOS. Although I have never tested the German version of WFW 3.11 (I have only tested the English and Chinese versions of WFW 3.11 on English MS-DOS 6.22/7.10, and they both work great), I start to know that it's probably the files of your German WFW 3.11 are damaged. Please obtain a good copy and try again.

I donīt think so, cause it works fine on my "realy" PC. In my opinion the problem is at M$ Virtual Pc 2004 and VMware Workstation 4.0.0 and the german Windows.

Could you send me your copy of WFWG english version ? I know itīs illegal but i need it only for testing and i wonīt buy it on ebay ...

If you are sure your copy of German WFW 3.11 is not corrupt, then it may be true that the German version of WFW 3.11 is not compatible with either VPC or VMWare, although I have never tested that as I said above. It's absolutely not legal to upload my English WFW 3.11. Could you send me your copy of German WFW 3.11, so I can check whether it works in virtual machines and then I will delete it for copyright reasons.

Here is another question: Exist german CPLs or TBLs for Dos 7.1 ?

I did receive your email, but no server address inside??

If you have the English version of MS-DOS 7.10, please select the code page 850 (Multilingual) from the code page list during installation. You can also try the German version of MS-DOS 7.10 when it comes.

OK, now you are uploading your German version of WFW 3.11 to my server, and I will download and test it as soon as you finish uploading. Do you have the German version of MS-DOS 6.x and Win98SE? If you do, could you please upload them to my server as well so I can use the files to make the German version of that DOS?

OK, I have successfully received your German WFW 3.11 that is uploaded to my server.

Just now I tested it on English version of MS-DOS 7.10 in both M$ VPC 2004 and VMWare 4.0 environment. It works really wonderful, and no problems or error messages at all during installation/startup! So, I have confirmed that the German version of WFW 3.11 is fully compatible with VPC, VMWare, and English MS-DOS 7.10 (I haven't test it on 6.22 yet). Thus, I'm quite sure you have done something wrong when you start SETUP for your German WFW 3.11 from DOS 6.22/7.10.

Here is a screenshot captured in VMWare 4.0 to show how well your German WFW 3.11 works on top of English MS-DOS 7.10 in a virtual machine:

Thanks for your help - SiyMan

(I will send you an eMail for the germand Dos 7.10)

So you mean the files on your virtual system is full of virus which causes that error? I'm quite certain the MS-DOS 7.10 Installation Set has no virus at all.
