Comment:
Trying to install 3.11 on a friend's computer with DOS 6.2 already installed.
After install, I get the message
Windows for Workgroups 3.11 is now setup.
Remove any floppy disks from your drives.
You need to incorporate the proposed changes into your config.sys, and then restart your computer. Then type WIN at the MS-DOS prompt to start Windows.
What are the "proposed changes"? I have installed 3.11 before and never had to incorporate proposed changes into config.sys. I've done this twice and if I just restart the computer, it's like 3.11 was never even written to the drive.
Thanks!

When you install Windows 3.1x, it makes changes to autoexec.bat and config.sys. For the most part, this amounts to the following.
1. installing HIMEM.SYS from the windows directory. If your version of DOS uses a later version (eg those from Win98), you should use those instead.
2. installing SMARTDRV.EXE from the windows directory. (ditto).
3. putting stacks=9,256 into config.sys
4. including the windows directory into the DOS path.
Wfw 3.11 is typically installed from DOS, the particular message comes up if you do not allow setup to make the proposed changes. You may have saved the proposed autoexec.bat and config.sys in the \windows directory, as autoexec.win and config.win.
The dream you dream alone is only a dream, The dream we dream together is reality.
Apparently you can't install Windows 3.11 to c:\win, you need to install it to c:\windows. I went back into DOS, did del c:\windows (which had nothing in it), confirmed yes, then reinstalled 3.11 and it is working great.
Thanks for the help!
