How can I install windows 95 over windows 3.1?
What I did was that this old computer doesn't have cd-rom and it runs under win 3.1, so I use a floppy disk to move win95 files to that computer.
When I run the autorun.exe files, it wouldn't run. Since win 3.1 runs under 16 bit and win 95 program is a 32 bit program. It refuses to run.

What should I do?
Any help would be appreciate it!

you can't just copy the 95 files on your hard disc, you have to run the process of installation. try to find w95 floppy or buy a cdrom

Thanks for replying d_lagneau,

I think I know what you talking about.
I meant that I copied the files from other computer rather than a CD-Rom.
Actually, I copied the win95 files from a Windows95 CD-Rom.

Did you try quitting 3.1 to dos and running setup.exe from your directory that you copied the 95 files to.

I've installed both 95 and 98 directly from a hard drive many times and had no problems at all. Setup.exe is what you need to start the installation with, not any autorun files.

Have the same problem....
I boot up to DOS , and run the c:\win95\setup.exe.
The win95 files are all inside my hard disk.
All went smoothly , but soon I will get an error message.
" setup has detected another version is running , please get the Windows upgrade version before continuing."

The reason why you just cant make a copy of Win95 is because there are hidden files on the setup disk that you cannot see, and when installation takes place, Win95 knows where to place these hidden files, updating your old version of Windows. I will find out if there is a way to copy from CD to Diskette (which will take alot of diskettes to do) or zip file it

OK Guys and if any gals
I have run into the exact problem everybody types about!!!I`m a small time consultant.
First of all it is better to run the 95 setup from your HDD but be sure u have a boot disk!!!I can post one on my sight if needed.first get your files on diskettes or cable copy them to a friends PC.Then use A cable file transfer program to copy the win95 folder from the install disk.Just the win95 folder is needed every thing of windows is in those cab files and if it`s version A then copy the entire win95 folder!
if theres any other folders inside Like OLS
(on line services)you won`t need it!E-mail me if you need a presice list of files I`ve taken 95 setup off a disk before and put it on floppys but it`s time consuming!!!
once you`ve formatted your drive and copyed the files on there, reboot with the boot disk!!then once you get the prompt CD to the directory the setup files are in and type setup thats all it takes is having the right directory and just type setup(only)
you`ll be on your way if you need further instructions or a parallel data transfer program let me know.I can tell you how to build a null modem cable too.(you probably already know that thow)
let me know how she flies!!
later

I heard that if you wish to install Windows 95B version over WIN 3.1 files that it will
work just the same as the upgrade. There are
no known upgrades to Win95B version, just
FULL Versions out there anymore.
Is this a Microsoft trick that the only difference is in the Product Code Key? How
do I install the FULL version then on top of WIN 3.1. Will it kick me out saying that
it found a previous version? Can I delete
all the WIN*.* files in my WIN 3.1 directory?
Please help? Thanks.. BRian queries..

How can I install a Windows 95 upgrade to a formated hard drive? I am prompted to locate a qualifying file/program to validate the Windows95 upgrade installation.

What file do I need to use to get past the "upgrade" verification?

Thanks for your help.
