I have an old 486 and would like to install win95 on it.it has no cd rom but i have 95 upgrade on floppies. it does not have win3.1 on it and the upgrade will not install. what files do i need to put on it to run the install?
thanx for whatever help you can give
tom

The installation of windows 95 upgrade from the cd is looking for these two files on your hard disk:
win386.exe
gdi.exeThese files don't even have to be the real files. Dummy files will do.
Just start the dos editor program and don't type anything in the window and choose FILE and SAVE.
In the SAVE AS window that opens, type in the box where it says FILE NAME:
C:\WIN386.exe
and press ENTER or click on OK. Then click on FILE and SAVE AS and this time type in
C:\GDI.exe
and then press ENTER or click on OK.
When you are finished there should be two new files in your root directory named
WIN386.EXE
GDI.EXEboth will be zero bytes in size. Now you should be able to run setup.
At least that's the way for the CD upgrade, not sure if it'll work for the Floppy upgrade.

The floppy upgrade will accept disk 1 from Windows 3.x if it can't find anything on the hard drive. If the above suggestion doesn't work, e-mail me and I'll send you a WinImage copy of Disk 1.
