I have a 1995 model Packard Bell Pentium 100MHz computer that I purchased in 1996. The model is LG 814 CD.

My 1995 model Packard Bell monitor was purchased separately in 1996 also. The model number is 1411SL. The video display is VGA, video control is Cirrus and video memory is 1,024 KB.

I have a 1.2 GB hard drive and 16 MB RAM (upgraded from 8 MB). I'm currently running under Windows 3.11 and DOS 6.22 (upgraded from 6.20). I have a Phoenix 4.04 BIOS. My base memory is 640 KB, my extended memory is 7,168 KB and my cache memory is 16 KB.

Here's my problem: The colors display on my monitor was accidentally changed from 256 colors to 16 million colors in WinMode.

When the colors setting was changed, I got the message "The monitor timings that you have selected require changes to the autoexec.bat file." I clicked on OK and my system rebooted.

I then got a message that there was
insufficient memory to display my icons but that I could go under Properties and change them back.

About half of the program items in my program groups changed to solid black boxes. The picture is gone but the icon still works.

When I tried to put the pictures back, I got the message "Insufficient memory to perform this operation. Quit one or more windows applications and try again." The icon then disappeared.

WinMode will not let me change my monitor display back to 256 colors. It defaults to 16 million colors whenever I attempt to do this.

Program Manager will not let me drag Program Items to a different Program Group. I get the Insufficient Memory message. I can't quit any applications to free up memory because none are running other than Program Manager.

As a test, I uninstalled a program, then reinstalled it. Program Manager will not display the icon of the reinstalled program.

I ran memory maker but it only gave me 2,192 K back.

A dir/w keyin shows:
186 files 6,618,732 bytes

148,996,096 bytes free

A mem keyin shows:
640K Conventional Memory with 76K used and 564K free.
151K Upper Memory with 132K used and 19K free.
384K Reserved Memory with 384K used and 0K free.
15,209K Extended Memory with 1,257K used and 13,952K free.
16,384K Total Memory with 1,849K used and 14,535K free.
791K Total Memory Under 1MB with 208K used and 583K free.

Program Manager shows:
Memory: 30,743 KB Free
System Resources: 66% Free

File Manager shows:
Memory: 30,553 KB Free
System Resources: 61% Free

My swap file is set at 20,475 KB and is Permanent.(Recommended size is 35,968 KB.)

I can live with the blacked out icons but I would like to get them back to normal. I would also like to get the monitor colors display back to normal and my video memory back to normal. Would replacing the video card or reloading Windows help? Also, under PBtools I have the option to Fix Windows. Would this help? Any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I haven't done much with 311.
But if you would like to reinstall
here is the link. You'll have to look for it.But you won't mind .It dos heaven.More things then you gould down in a week.
If this don't do any good then look at the posting I need windows 3x.This site have a up grade from 31 to 311 .
If you got a lot of missing things you may wont save your programs and reinstall.
Save your cd-rom driver and parth.Config.sys and autoexec.bat files.Check your startup files. For changes .Check the ini files. This is where the changes are at.Now i remember.
Check the win.ini and system.ini files for changes.Edit or use notepad to open the file.
When changes were made it sounds like part of the ini files were deleted.I have a win 31 start up disk you could try. This may restore the icons.Do a undele to see if any ini or grd files has been deleted these are your main files in windows 31 and shouls be in 311 I think.
Best of luck

roy, there's no need to reinstall windows; if you wish to change to a lower or higher colour depth, you don't have to use "winmode" - that's just a utility to make it easier for you to change resolutions from within windows. here's the best way to do it.

exit to dos. type "cd c:\windows" and hit . then type "setup" and hit (this works with any version of windows 3.x). when the blue screen comes up, scroll up to "display type", hit , then scroll down and choose either "cirrus logic 256 colours" or "cirrus logic 65K colors". if your video card is an "ISA" card (fits into 16-bit slot on motherboard", you can choose only 256 colours; however, if it's a VESA or PCI, you can choose 64K colours (64000). then save it, and restart windows.

good luck,

james
