Hello people. I was looking at something the other day and accidentally fell on a link for AOL 4.0 for Windows 3.1. This is a 6.7 MB download and is still available from their own FTP server (i had no idea!). It requires a 486 or better with at least 16 MB of RAM. You can find the link to it on my page in the Browsers section.

If your system doesn't meet these requirements, you can still use AOL 3.0 that is also on the page, right below the AOL 4.0 link.

HTH.

Lightspeed, I picked up one of the free 1,500 hour cd's from AOL not too long ago and in a folder on the cd it had every single version of AOL ever put into publication. I thought that was awsome.

Sounds great Terri. I didn't get one of those in the mail for a good while, i guess they just gave up getting me to switch lol!

I guess the downloads can still be useful to people with no CD drive on their older system.

Thanks for letting me know :)

I didn't get mine in the mail. I picked it up going through the grocery store checkout line. They were just sitting there. That was the one for AOL 7.0.

Yes all those versions go back to AOL 3.0 only. However, they're in hidden folders on the disk. On the AOL cd instructions, I think they sometimes give you directions on how to setup AOL 3.0 for Windows 3.1. Isn't the highest version of AOL for Windows 3.1 5.0? or is it only 4.0?

Following Terri's comments, i took another look at my stack of commercial CDs. The latest AOL CD i had was from about 8 months ago, but it is the 7.0 (Canadian) version. The version i have may differ slightly from what Terri got. On the CD i could find AOL 3.0, 5.0, 5.0b. 6.0 and 7.0 in english, 6.0 and 7.0 only in french. There was no 4.0 folder. Looking at the files, it appears that only 3.0 was for 16 bits systems, all other files saying something like setup32.exe and such. That is why i was a bit surprised findind this AOL 4.0 16 bits thing. Probably based on IE4 16 bits. I dunno WinMan if they ever released version 5.0 for W31 users. If they did, it would likely be based on IE5.0 16 bits, since this was prior to their acquisition of Netscape. If anyone knows of AOL 5.0 16 bits, i'd like to know about it.

I just picked up a copy of the newest AOL disk out (8.0). If you want, Lightspeed, email me and we can see about me transfering it to you so you have it. It does have all the different ones on there including 4.0. It actually has (2) 3.0's. One for 3.1 and one for 95. Who knows maybe I can get them uploaded somewhere (just for safe keeping). Email and let me know what you think, ok?
