The problem: The browser opens, however only FILE appears in the top bar. The others, EDIT VIEW FAVORITES etc are missing.
The system: Win 3.1, Pentium 200ish, 32 MB ram and it is on a network. Novell Netware 32 runs in the background. Currently run Netscape 4.08 without a hitch. Was also running IE4.01 with no problems also. But now, I can't return to 4.01 and cant properly uninstall IE5.0 I put share.exe as suggested in the autoexec file.
Can anyone take a guess where I went wrong or where to go from here? I was tempted to delete all reference of IE 4 and 5 using regedit16.exe, but since this is not my system, and I am no computer genius, I won't. Not for now anyway. Steve

I can tell you exactly where you went wrong.. you're running an operating environment that is long since outdated, and nothing current is written for it. Chances are, your IE browser is now toast. Either use Netscrape, also an outdated product, or join the current, or past, decade and switch to at LEAAST 98 or 98SE.

I run Win 98 at home. But at work, the network is a mix-match of Win 3.1 Win 95 and 98 and NT. This machine happens to be Win 3.1 Eventually we will be upgraded, with the key word being 'eventually'. So in the meantime, this machine is the only link to the WWW that we have in our departement. I know, pretty sad....

Well, you could just try reinstalling IE5. If this doesn't work (and IE5 can be tricky to reinstall!), you can get the procedure to manually deinstall IE5 16 bits from my briefcase (got it from Microsoft support). Then reinstall. But since you have Netscape 4.08, you could just use IE3. It's much faster than IE5 (and Netscape), and much easier to install (and much smaller). The link to my briefcase is at the top of my page.

Thanks much. I will give this a try tonight at work. But what about manually removing refernences to IE in the registry? Bad idea?

Editing the registry is not something i like to do, unless absolutely necessary, you can end up with more problems than you had to begin with. But if you know what you are doing... I would make a back up copy first!

I followed the instructions for manually uninstalling IE 5.0 I then went through the install process again. This time, it actually got to the point telling me that the browser was installed and that I had to reboot to complete the install. After reboot, it froze at the active setup at the point it was installing c:\windows\system\mlang16.dll
And another pop up windows said Application Error, Call to Undefined Dynalink. So I am thinking I have a dll file problem of one sort or another. I did notice that after editing the win.ini file to prevent any TSR programs from running, that after rebooting, the Novell Netware Client 32 application was still alive and well. So below I enclosed a copy of the autoexec.bat fileI am wondering if I need to edit the autoexec file to temporarily prevent the client 32 app from starting. If so, please tell me how to do that. But in the same breath, I wonder if that will screw up my LAN connection thereby wreaking havoc with my IE install process. Note below where I placed the share.exe line in the autoexec file below.... Steve
share.exe
C:\WINDOWS\VGAUTIL\winmode.exe t640=72 t800=72t1024=70 t1152=0 t1280=0 t1600=0

You were almost there! Couldn't have been that easy... Let's see if i can help you get this thing fixed, check your email.

Just curious.. but why are you doing your own software installs for a PC in your department? Do you not have some sort of internal tech support/help desk?
Most techies find it no end of annoying when an un-trained end user does their own PC work, breaks it, then DEMANDS it gets fixed. Not saying you're doing this, but really and truly, there are so many "experts" out there, it gets to be a pain for those of use who actually know what we're doing and do it for a living, and have been doing it since PCs first crawled out of the oceans.

Granted I am no expert, and you certainly have made a valid point, and I generally agree with it.
That said, we are a multi site conglomeration of anything and everything that is computing. At our site, we have the reputation of being the "Forgotten Campus". When others are running NT Win 98 etc, we here are stuck with Win 3.1. Whats more, although they want us to have Internet access, all the network people have seen fit to supply us with is Netscape 3.0 We can not even access the company's own Intranet with that browser. So you tell me, whats wrong with this picture. Being that I succesfully added Netscape 4.08 and IE 4.01 without a hitch, and granted, the first time I hit the install button I was a bit nervous for the very reasons you stated. But in the end, I am now running IE 5.0 without the network folks coming over to unbreak it for me. It was a calculated risk, but fortunately for me, and the others that use this machine, it all worked out.
