I have installed WIN3.1 with MS-DOS 6.22 on an old Compaq Contura 410 (486DX, 4MB). The Modem CREATIX LC144VF works fine with TERMINAL.exe on COM1 (Address=03F8, IRQ=4, UART-Chip=16550AF). After installation of Internet Explorer 3.01 (i also tried 3.03) and try to connect to internet, there is an error message „unable to initialize modem“. Afterwards the modem RTS and DTR signals are on ! The dialstring in SHIVAPPP.INI is ATX4D. I tried to edit the dialstring to ATDT but it always comes up with ATX4D. I also changed the initstring in MODEMS2.INI to ATZ but it still does not work. What´s wrong ???? Thanks für help !!!

When you clik on the phone icon to connect, the CONNECT TO window opens. Instead of cliking CONNECT, try PROPERTIES, then on top clik MODEM. Verify that the com port and speed are correct (speed should be >= to that of your modem). Then, clik ADVANCED to verify the irq and com port address. If all seems correct, go back and try changing the modem from the list. You also have the option of trying to run the connection wizard again. There should be an icon to that effect in your IE3 group.

Try setting the modem to Standard modem manually. That should probably work.
