Dear....
I am writing this message using Opera 3.62 because when I try to access this site with Internet Explorer 3.03 it's very slow and hesitates for about 20 seconds before responding to mouse clicks. Any ideas.
Thanks,
John

How about 16-bit Internet Explorer 4.0 or 5.0?

Navigator 3.04 does just fine with Java Script turned off. Even on "faster" machines such as yours, IE 4 & 5 bogs down.

Hi Wengier/T-R-A,
Wengier - That also was my first thought, to try internet explorer 5, but for some reason when I tried to install it I was told that I need at least 4 mb (I think of ram) and refused to go further. I tried another download from another site and got the same message. My Virtual memory is at 20+mbs, and I have 128 mb of ram, so I'm not sure what's going on here. Thanks for the suggestion.
T-R-A - That's a thought. The reason I put IE3 on is to take advantage of the dialer. How is Netscape's dialer? Netscape also has a mail package doesn't it? To tell you the truth Opera 3.62 is very fast, but I also have this problem with only being able to use 16 colour VGA drivers for my RAGE PRO, and the Opera browser turns out a lot of script with hatched lines that are hard to read. Internet Explorer doesn't seem to have this problem.
Your comments please.
John

John Clarke,

As the setup readme file of 16-bit IE 5.0 says, you need to specify the switch "/f:16" for SETUP in order to install it on your system. Did you specify that switch for IE5 SETUP?

Wengier's right about the f:/16 switch for IE 5's setup. It has problems with machies that have loads of memory (most versions of DOS didn't even see anything above 64MB anyway---not sure what version you've got, but the f:/16 switch works anyway). If you've already got the dialer for IE 3.03 working, then Netscape 3.04 will usually have no problems using it. I never was really fond of Netscape's mail client---I use Eudora 1.54 on my WfWG machine. But Navigator renders more pages readable than most of the "version -3" browsers. I also use Opera 3.62 myself quite a bit, and I like the ability to turn off images and document settings. I stopped at 3.62 (the last version for Win3x) since they started charging full price for upgrades on versions below 4.0. BTW-not knocking Zero Cool, but there is no IE6 for Win3.1.

Zero Cool

Check your facts....

IE 6.0 is for Windows 98 onwards. It is not even designed to work with Windows 95!

Even when you talk about IE 4.0 or 5.0 for Windows 3.1 they must be the 16bit versions.

It is not just the Speed or Processer, But the version of Windows used as well!

Thank you all for you replies.
Zero Cool - Are you sure about IE6 for WFWG? There seems to be a lot of disagreement about that.
Wengier - Thanks for the information. How, or better where, do I enter this /f:16 command during the installation?
T-R-A - I have DOS 6.22. Yes, Eudora's pretty good. I like Phoenix because of it's ability to preview headers, but I don't even know if there's a version for WFWG. I use Phoenix on my widows 98 machine as a previewing method. I'll probably just continue to log onto my ISPs website for my mail. I really like Opera 3.62 but it does have this 16 color image problem. I bought the upgrade for Opera 6. It also is fast, but most of the websites seem to be tailored for IE. I don't think I'm going to pay for any more upgrades.
funickk - I've tried those drivers. Those are the ones that caused my system to lockup. These are the same ones that are listed for the 3D Rage Pro I have.

Despite the number of posts already submitted, nobody seems to have suggested using netscape 4.08...on a fast machine like yours theres no reason to use 3.04, as 4.08 does everything that does , speedily, and a lot more, including (at least the last time i tried it) accessing hotmail's site..tho you'll have to click past one of those 'please download IE" pages!..On my WfWG system i only use NS408 and Opera 362...IE just crashes and burns regularly...

Oh, thought i should add this, as it was the reason for the post in the first place, and that's that i've had more problems logging in to computing net , with more browsers, on all sorts of oprating systems, than any other site...and one of the only browsers that has never given me any problem with it at all (on any platform, but especially WfWG) , is Netscape 4.08.........

Thanks Dominicus,
I'm going to try that. After I posted the original message I tried IE5.01. Geeze, what a pain. It kept insisting on looking for my home page on my C drive. (I think the problem was that I installed 5.01 overtop of 3.03, cause there were a lot of duplicate files in the windows directory.)I enventually had so much trouble that I ended up deleting my windows directory and reinstalling WFWG. That's where I am now. I never did get IE3.03 to work well and was in the process of going for another shot at it when I read your post. Does NS408 have a dialer?
P.S. I also have had much trouble with this web site.

If you've got IE 3.03 working with it's dialer, you don't need another. Enable "Dial on Demand" and disable "Start Internet Explorer when Connected" (or whatever it's labeled---I'm not near my WfWG machine right now) and it'll bring up IE's dialer whenever you start a browser.

I don't use IE 3.03 here (but I'll try and let you know). When on the WfWG laptop, I use Netscape 3.04 (using IE's dialer & java-script turned off to prevent popups and re-directs). It got to the point where IE 3.03 wouldn't display anything correctly. I never noticed any real "speed" issues with it, but the page encoding got almost unbearable (I guess it was M$'s implementation of whatever the HTML standards were at the time). For speed, I usually use Opera 3.62 with images and document settings turned off. I find myself sometimes wishing there was a 16-bit version of something like Off-By-One or Mozilla Firebird (now Firefox) that was available for Win3.x

Hi T-R-A,
"I don't use IE 3.03 here (but I'll try and let you know)" Thanks, I'd appreciate that. I also use Opera 3.62, but on this system it's quite fast. I have an old Toshiba laptop with a 486/50mhz that has only 4mb of ram. The only browser I've found that has anywhere near acceptable speed on this one is Opera 2.12, but it has some serious limitations.
