H E L P !
running win 3.1 and IE 3 right now, but I installed ICQ and it says it doesn't recognize the dialer - "Shiva?"
If I download/install IE 5 will that fix that problem?????
I have downloaded the "Trumpet" dialer, but haven't installed lest I crash... need more info on that one...
Can anybody help?
Thanks

IE won't work with win3.1 - i think the latest version that'll work is 3.
You probably need a older version of ICQ fro win3.1 - no idea where you'll get it - perhaps look at old magazine cover cd's???

frank, i have another solution ,one that works. search around the internet, and fine a copy of netscape navigator 3.01 with dialer. it's the shiva dialer as well, but DOES work with ICQ for windows 3.1x. you can still use internet explorer 3 if you wish, and use the netscape dailer. just make sure you don't have BOTH dialers installed at the same time, otherwise your computer will do WIERD things!
as far as ICQ, the latest version unfortuantely is a few years old, but still works good. you can download it right from www.icq.com. note that you also need win32s (32-bit for windows 3.1x) installed in order to use ICQ. if you need that, you can find it at www.tucows.com, under the windows 3.1x section.

James,
I appreciate your helpful response to my question.
I will check that out. As it is, I had already downloaded a netscape browser, but it did not come with it's own dialer... After I put it is it used the one with IE....
thanks again
Frank

I have ICQ and I am about to put in IE 4.01, in my oppion I prefer IE instead of Netscape.
E-Mail me for the files.

Both of my Win 3.1 Systems use Trumpet for dialing, and run Netscape and ICQ with no trouble at all. I like the trumpet dialer.
I dont think Microsoft has IE5 for win 3.1, they only take it to 3.0. But Netscape Navigator is a close equivilant, that is avalible for Win 3.1 in the archives section
of their site. www.netscape.com

There is an IE5 for win311! You can download it right from the MS site. BUT you'll need a fast pc and a lot of ram. I.m.o. if you have specs like that. you'll be better of with win9x.

OK,..Here's what I know as being fact. Internet explorer 5, is available for windows 3.1 . Upgrading to IE5 does not solve your dialer problem, however. The best advice I can offer has already been mentioned. Download an earlier Netscape Nav package, with dialer, but select IE as your default browser if that is the one you prefer. ICQ will work with the Netscape, dialer and browser packages.

I am using a P120 16mb 56K modem, with Win 3.11, IE5.0, AOL AIM 1.6N, mIRC 5.71, all of which work fine. I can't use IE5.0 dialer with ICQ, and can't use Netscape dialer with my ISP. Try Tucows for 16-bit software!

The latest version of IE for Win 3.1x is 5.01, which is no longer available from Microsoft's website, and you will have to obtain from classic.tucows.com/softweb.html. Trumpet Winsock is a great dialer, but will not work with dialup POP's that require PAP authentication, and you will have to use a Shiva or equivalent dialer, which you can get with the IE/Dialer combo from classic.tucows.com/softtcp.html. ICQ does work with WIN 3.1, but it's an old version (1.111 beta) and this is obtainable from classic.tucows.com/cmess.html. Upgrading IE to 5.01 once you have installed 3.02a with dialer should work just fine. I have two successfully running Win 3.11 machines that both have this upgrade and work just fine.
