Is there a version of Windows 3.1 made by IBM? I have heard this is a very rare version of this O/S.

IBM OS/2 Warp 3 has one version with the Windows 3.1 program included as part of the overall installation.I have not heard of any stand alone version of Windows 3.1 by IBM.Good luck.

Yes IBM Warp 3 was packaged like this, and Yes it may be possible to install seperately, though wether or not you need PCDOS could not ascertain, as it was really meant to be installed with OS/2 files.

IBM did indeed have a OEM version of Microsoft Windows 3.1 as an option for the PS1 range. As far as I can remember the only differance was a IBM startup screen, and disk labels. Other than that and possibly a IBM drivers disk there was no differance.

Many computer manufactures provided OEM versions of both DOS & Windows with minor twecks to the programs. such as Dell, Hewlett Packard, Oliveti, Zenith, and others.

Mick is correct!

I have a 6 diskette IBM OEM version of Win3.1 that came with my old 386 IBM PS/2 Desktop PC...if u want to see what the startup splash screen looks like click HERE...

I also had an IBM version pre-installed on a couple of 486 IBM PS/Note 425 Laptops that I purchased...There was a different IBM startup splash screen used on them...

Other than that there is not much of a noticeable difference between the IBM OEM version & the other (5 diskette) version that I own.

OOPS...I forgot to mention that the 486 IBM PS/Note 425 Laptops came with some extra IBM Software located in two seperate directories named:

C:\WELCOME
C:\PS1TOOLS

Not sure if this was installed using a seperate disk or if it came with the IBM OEM Win3.1 installation diskettes...

I was messing around with one of the IBM PS/Note Laptops last night & I found something that I did not know was there before...it turns out that the installation files were saved onto the Hard Disk in a Windows sub-directory named "DRIVERS"...it seems to be a 6 diskette installation set...I will transfer the files to disks & re-install Win3.1 on one of the other IBM PS/Note Laptops (that I wiped clean & formatted) to see if the Ps1tools Software is part of the complete OEM installation or just an add on...

Later...
N1

The IBM PS/Note Laptop that contained the installation files has an 85mb HDD...(the rest of the lot came with 127-164mb HDDs)

The IBM PS/2 Desktop PC originally came with a HUGE 40mb HDD...LOL...I upgraded it to a 162mb HDD, then a 520mb HDD...
