>>Quote: Why are yall still using Win 3.1?<<

If ya only knew how many times thats been ask and answered here :) but it still never gets old :)

I dont have a lotta time right now to write up a long speech so ill throw out some important points.

Most of this will make no difference to the everyday computer user who just wants a PC to use, They will still say Win3.1 users are just nuts (and maybe we are) but maybe we do know something they dont ;)

Security:
Most Viruses and Trojans running around today will do nothing to a Win3.1 system they wont infect the email system as they were written for the latest and greatest MSOutLook Express, and made to attack Win95 and Up.

Price:
For the price of a New 1.anything Gig machine you can buy an Army of 486's (who would want that?) someone building a home or office network (which ive done with 8 machines) 5 of the 8 are 486's and cost $125.00 for 3 and 2 i got for free as part of the deal (these were not just boxes, we're talking monitors keyboards mice etc for 5 machines for $125.00) 2 ive set up to run Linux and 3 are set up to run WFWG3.11.

Privacy:
Did you know Micro$oft is in the business of spying on you? did you know you could consider them BigBrother? well if you didnt listen up, Win98 and Up have programming built in them which automatically connects to the Micro$oft servers and gives them information about you, Your System, Your ISP, Your web browsing habbits, and access to your files (If they want it), XP is the worst culprit of this, why do think Windows XP comes with its own built-in Firewall? because it lets the connection and spying happen without you being alerted to it (talk about the wolf guarding the henhouse) They set that included firewall to "Not" tell you its connecting to their site secretly, if you run a firewall on a fresh installation of Win98 and Up the very first time you access the net itll catch the connection attempt and block it asking you if you wish to allow it and youll see what im talkin about, but with WinXP Micro$oft is being slick and including their "own" firewall braggin about how you get all this protection, and they added programming to XP that disables any other firewall you might try to use instead of the preset one they put in it, truth is i think their scared about how many people are switching over to Linux and other OS's and the wanna spy on your system to see if their corporate customers have alternate OS's on their machines or to see if they have Windows Warez on their machines, but in any case how much do you value your right to privacy?
(something to think about eh?)

You shouldnt have to pay for a New OS like XP with your privacy in addition to cold hard cash.

Stability/Knowledge:
Win3.1 is whats called an Open Architecture Designed Shell (all it really is, is a shell sitting on DOS) but because it an Open Architecture Design you the user has 100% control over how it works, from switching over to DOS and back to Windows to making changes to configurations directly adding drivers, automating batch scripts you name it, the hardcore DOS/Windows 3.1 user will develop more computer skills than any one who begins their computer use at Win95/up because they have to kno the workings behind the shell meaning DOS.

Proof of this is seen in many Computer Programming Classes (who always start people off learning in DOS and Shelled Environments like VBasic).

Win95 thru XP is so automated its perfect for the (i want the computer to do everything for me) user :)

Bloatware:
Bloatware is exessive code in a program and Win95/Up which is 32Bit code is the perfect example of it (can you say IE5.0 and is huge download?) compare that to 16Bit Windows3.11 code and IE3.02 that fits on 3, 1.44 mb floppy disks. This difference is the case with all software for 32bit and 16bit programs.

Nostalgia:
I and many others learned how to use a computers in DOS/Windows3.11 actually i remember even using some CPM machines when i was a lil kid (lets not get into that :), heh
in any case running these old OS's is like driving your old HotRodded 69 Camaro SS, sure the new cars out there are faster and full of air bags and nice nifty technology but they cant beat the Rumbling Sound of a Big Block 454 V8 engine same as XP cant beat the ability DOS/Win3.1 gives the user to adjust, fix, modify and control their own machines.

To us an analogy..

(Win95 thru WinXP = Fuel injection)
you the user has little control over adjustments as most of the system is sealed from adjustment, you can tweak some things.

DOS/Win3.1 = 4 Barrel Holley Carburator
you the user has 100% control over everything every function and can tweak everything just the way you like it.

(Win95 thru WinXp = Automatic Transmission)
your just along for the ride.

(DOS/Win3.1 = Manual Transmission)
your changing gears and smokin the tires as you choose.

can you tell im a car guy on the side :P
*grins*

so much for the short speech..

Dont shoot the messenger, just maim him a little.

Zyo

Doofus, that was just perfect!

Zyo, that remark about Win 3.1 being nearly impervious to viruses is right on! Most of these nasty things are designed for 32 bits systems. I should know, i used WFW 3.11 without a firewall or an anti-virus program for over a year on the net before i knew better, without ever encountering any threat! So much so that now than i'm thinking about setting up my own server, i will use a win 3.1 program to do so, to minimize the risks.

Yes, using Win 3.x demands more computer knowledge, but it is worth it. You have the control!
