Comment: I have a very old computer and it is running 3.1 and when I turn it on it says c:drive failure, run setup press F1 to resume and when I do it says insert boot diskette in drive A. How can I make a boot diskette to correct this problem? Thank you in advance.

Reply: (edit)Go into CMOS and check the usuall drive settings - especially the hard drive cylinders, heads and sector settings. If the details are not on the drive go to the manufacturers site. Yes, you have to open the computer for this (and maybe remove the hard drive), so hold the chassis - to equalize static electricity - while you're poking around in there) If after setting everything in CMOS/BIOS you find settings disappear/change and strange messages appear when booting, check the battery condition in the computer - replace if necessary (it's probably flat). This may be easier at a shop since some early batteries were soldered in place.

Reply: (edit)Windows 3.1 has no Boot Disk, as it is not an OS You need a MS-DOS Boot Disk which can be created via File Manager. Then copy all files needed and change Autoexec.Bat & Config.Sys to find files on A Drive.

Reply: (edit)To make a win31 bootdisk. Make a system disk....format a:/s Copy the config.sys and autoexec.bat files to the disk. Go to windows and copy all ini & grp files edit the autoexec.bat file on the disk and add win as the last command. This works I've made them myself. If you need one go here to download one.
