Have you been to, say, maybe, yeah, the maufacturer's support site?

Well, generic 256 Color drivers exist (Google "SVGA.EXE") all over the net, and WinZip 6.3 (16-bit) should be at oldversion.com...

I noticed from your earlier post you have a Toshiba something (200, 205, 205c?) with 100Mhz pentium/16Mb ram.

At any rate, Toshiba has anything you need on their support site.

Yes, mat - try and work with us. In case you hadn't noticed, this is a fairly slow moving board, and it's safe to assume nearly all of the 'regulars' here are familiar with your question.
To make the best use of this forum you need to respond meaningfully to requests for further information - if you can't do that, may as well stop right now.

"it just flashed a dos screen"

Just to see what the problem was, I d/l'd the file and executed it - this information was presented onscreen

Disk eXPress Self-Extracting Diskette Image (OS/2 and DOS) V2.34 07/08/94
(c) Copyright 1991-94 Albert J. Shan. All Rights Reserved.
SHAREWARE VERSION

Usage: CT48W31 [/d] [/s] [/t] [drive:]

/d Display image description
/s Suppress overwrite prompt
/t Test image file integrity only
drive Drive letter of the target diskette drive

Note: The target diskette must be formatted and must not have any bad sectors.

These are instructions on how to use the file - I will interpret:

Open a DOS window on your computer in the folder the file resides in. Place a floppy (blank or otherwise) in the a: drive and enter

ct48w31 a:

The file will create a driver diskette for you - you will be prompted:

+------ Diskette Image Description ------+

Toshiba Win 3.x Advanced Display Drivers
Disk 1 of 1
For Satellite Pro 410CS, 410CDT, 415CS
REQUIRES FORMATTED 1.44MB DISKETTE
--------------+
1.44M diskette image (Disk eXPress type 2)

Diskette in drive A: is about to be overwritten
with new information. Do you wish to continue? (y/N):

(enter y)

Eventually you will have a driver disk - what you are interested in is this folder on a:

[WINDOWS]
MSDETSTF.DLL
SETUP.EXE
WSET545.INF
SET5K545.SCP

I would think that you can run that setup.exe from Win31 to install your high res drivers.

Instructions are meant to be read (RTFM) - also keep in mind that "it didn't work" or "it never worked" is not very useful to those trying to solve your problem.

Hope that helps you

Actually, having had another look at the disk, there is a WINSETUP.exe in the root directory of A: - that may be your best bet.

Maybe you are.

You need to be 'in' the folder that the file resides in to execute it (well, more or less)

Ok - are you running this from an XP machine? - that's a bit of an odd message for DOS/Win9x.

If you're still encountering difficulty, put the file on a floppy that works in DOS - then copy the file to a folder on the laptop's hard drive.

Then, from DOS, go to that folder and execute the file as demonstrated to create the driver disk.

Personally, I'm not such a fatalist - it's far too easy to give up and say "well, it just wasn't meant to be"

Balls

I doubt very much if God or any other deity is concerned over your laptop. If I had to guess, I would say it's your unfamiliarity (and perhaps impatience) with the older software, Operating Systems and computers.

Ok - I gather your previous problem with incomprehensible characters and (somehow) getting a properties menu to display in Win31 - that's all fixed now?

You were able to successfully run the original file and create the driver disk, despite your initial wrong turns?

So, now you have the driver diskette and you are running which setup program - and from what, Win31 or a 'real' DOS prompt?

You may recall my previous admonition concerning "it doesn't work" as a completely inadequate description.

You're doing it again.

You have to relate exactly what you are doing if anyone has any hope of following along in order to understand the situation and perhaps advise you.

Step by step, these things can usually be resolved.

"i installed the driver onto my hard drive and there isnt even a driver in there"

Ok - you need to explain that too - how setup doesn't work, but you installed the driver. Maybe it's just the terminology?

The README.TXT file seems to be missing from this diskette!

Found the following at Toshiba which may help.
SETUP needs to be run from DOS

1.
Extract files onto 3.5" 1.44MB Diskette.
2.
From a DOS prompt (not within Windows, must exit Windows completely), change into A: and run
"SETUP". To do this at the prompt type A: and hit enter and the type SETUP and hit enter.
3.
Press any key to continue.
4.
Hit for "Windows Version 3.1 (655XX accelerated drivers)".
5.
Hit for "All Resolutions" so that it read "selected".
6.
Hit to start installation.
7.
After it is done, hit to exit to DOS.
8.
Change into C:\WINDOWS directory by typing CD\WINDOWS and hit enter. Run "SETUP" again by
typing SETUP and hit enter.
9.
Move up to DISPLAY and select the proper resolution and color palette for your specific model.
10.
Type WIN to re-enter Windows.

Hope this is of help.

Yes - I'd noticed the absence of the readme text too. Having a (non bootable) driver disk in the form of a disk image is an unecessary complication, but not an insurmountable one.

It's just hard to know what young mat is doing - I appreciate his frustration, but a little patience and cooperation will go a long way - as well as a positive attitude.

Here's hoping : )

Could be a hardware problem - which would be too bad, laptops are not so easy to fix.

Does the initial POST screen display properly?

Are you loading anything unusual in your DOS configuration? You can try a 'clean boot' to DOS by hitting F5 once you see the 'Starting MS-DOS' message.

Low battery maybe??

Seeing as how your original problem has been resolved, and that this thread has become somewhat lengthy - you might consider posting as a new question (but maybe reference this post#).

Try and outline the problem as clearly as possible. Sometimes hardware does not perform to our expectations, especially used or 2nd hand items. You'll either need to find a way to work around these limitations or else accept them.

I'm just looking for clues at the scene of the crime
