Solved I have an old laptop and need to install windows 3.1

Specs: DOS

I picked up a really old laptop, not too sure of any specs. But its a brick and runs on DOS. It says windows is not installed so I was wondering where I could download a copy to put onto a floppy disk for it.

✔ Best Answer

Microsoft still owns 3.x so no legal downloads are available. Best way is to buy it on ebay. You will often find a deal with DOS and Win3.x unopened for just a few bucks.

If you are a subcriber to MSDN you can download it with MSs blessing.

Doesn't that cost something like 700 bucks? I know prices for Win3.x have gone up on ebay but not that much...

No idea. But there are plenty of links to download it if one bothers to do even a small web search.

There's is the possiblity at least some of the floppies on the ebay auctions aren't functional Hell, they might even be counterfeit copies ;)

It's probably important to note that most dos/windows bundles are OEM which violates the Terms and Conditions of use anyway- in otherwords they are ment to be sold with new systems. Padantic I know, but there you go.

I did try a couple downloads, but one didn't seem to work and the other one wouldn't fit onto the floppys I have.

They'll be either an archive of the whole disk set or individual images of the of disks. You'll need to write the images to disk using the correct program, not just copy the files to disk.

There's usually instruction in a readme file on how to go about this as well as various websites with instructions. Handy to know if you need to track down applications to use within Windows 3.x which come on multiple disks.

If you have no luck ebay may be your only other option as suggested above. Depending on where you live you might have luck getting a copy from a secondhand/thrift store.

Good luck
