Subject: I get a blank screen... |
Comment: I have an old Compaq Presario 720 with MS-DOS/Windows 3.1. I accidently deleted something I wasn't suppose to. Now whenever my computer starts up and after it gets to the Windows 3.1 window I get a black screen... and there's no way of getting out of it. PLEASE HELP!

Reply: (edit)Hi Jay: If you have a floppy disk backup of your Windows directory (current hopefully) you can try restoring it back using c:/msbackup in DOS. Inside you will need to restore the backup data file from last disk of that group of disks. Without knowing what you deleted, it's difficult to retore system without a backup, or re-install Win 3.1 over current installed one. Good luck. Z

Reply: (edit)Jay - If you have DOS version 5 or above, then you might be able to use Undelete to restore the file. At the c:\ prompt type: undelete c:\windows\*.* It will then attempt to undelete everything deleted in the Windows directory. All you need to do is supply it with the first letter of the filename - i.e., if you deleted win.com (which you didn't), you would fill in ?in.com with "w". If you can't guess the first letter of the file, then use the process of elimination, using the "guess and check" method - using one letter, seeing if it works, and if it doesn't, rename it using another. To rename a file, use ren filename1 filename2 at the DOS prompt. I hope this helps Xanathar.
