I cant change the 255 in my subnet!

Hello every1!! OK...I'm trying 2 set up my network in Windowqs 3.1...but I have a problem, I'm in the Microsoft TCP/IP Configuration, and I'm using another driver than my network card's...but I dont care...my problem is that I cant change my Subnet Mask!! :( It is 248.0.0.0, but it doesnt let me change it!! :@ It says "You should not change the default 255 in the Subnet Mask. Only fields whose defaults are zeros can be changed." Why cant I change it?!! Thanx!! ;)
PS: Is there a Win3.1 Internet tutorial that u can give me?? once I saw a really good one, but I lost the URL...:( I remember it had big letters on the top of the page... Thanx!! ;)
