Ok I just got a computer from a friend. I got it for free becuase he said he crashed the hard drive. This is not true as I have tested mutliple hard drives on this particular cpu. The problem is I am on this cpu and it is a MS-DOS 6.22 version. He gave me all the disks which had windows 3.11 and a windows 95 emergency boot disk. My problem is When I try to install 3.11 it will not let me install it says the hard drive is not working correctly. I got the same message with another hard drive. Some have told me to partition it which I had some idea on how to do. I typed FDISK in but it said No Fixed Disks available. The CD-ROM has no drivers so it will not work as yet. All I have is the hard drive and a Floppy 1.44 mb drive which i used for boot. I have a ms-dos boot disk if that is of any help. Could someone please help me get windows installed on this computer? I have worked many hours on trying to get it to work with no sucess. I am computer literate to an extent.

Have you entered the BIOS yet? As the computer is booting up it should say something like Hit F2 or DEL or some key to enter setup. Your hard drive must be recognized there first. It is possible that the battery is dead and the Hard drive must be found again in the BIOS.

I agree with DR, sounds like the HD hasn't been recognised by the BIOS. Is the IDE ribbon connector the correct way round?

The Ribbons to my knowledge are correct. I have entered the BIOS and used a Win98 boot disk. I managed to get into the C:\ dir but it still says No FixeD Disk Present when i type FDISK to partition it. Using that 98 boot is the only way thus far I have found that will even let me get any where near the C:\ Drive. Dos even tells me I may need to partition but how can I partition without a FDISK command working? Please post any other thoughts I greatly appreciate the help.

when you entered the bios 'cmos' did it show the hdd and the correct infor for the drive? you may need to pull the drive to get its specs ie. cly, heads and sect data it must match what is in cmos or it will not work.
