If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Windows 3.1 is started from the dos command win.com. DOS loaders were quite common. Xtree gold was started by one, as is dosshell (a hacked version of windows 3.0).

Win.com would then set some environment variables, and make way for loading dos32, which lives variously in dosx, dsswap or win386. Whatever version of dos32 is loaded, one then processes winstart.bat and the [386enh] section of system.ini.

After all of this is done, the program krnl386 is loaded. This then loads a swarm of applications, which loads the presentation layer, and then looks for system.ini [Boot] for the shell program.

The shell program then runs its initialisation, eg autostarts, and then displays its c:\> prompt.

Below is an example of what an autoexec may look like:

@echo off
SET SOUND=C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\
LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.exe /D:123
LH C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.exe
DOSKEY
CLS

from the above link

mine has echooff
prompt
and 6 more lines one being what i typed in above the set thing

this is tedious

why did i change it

is win really the right thing to insert in there>? where?

i put it in second line does it matter where win is in there?

I've read all the post's and man people are getting angry :P, mind you took me about 5 mins to get this to work first time round, after all I'm only human :P. To have wnidows load instead of typing win edit your autoexec.bat file. To do this from the dos prompt type edit autoexec.bat .This will then open the file for editing. Simply move to below the last line of text and add C:\Windows\Win.com or just win but i think it works either way. Note C:\Wnidows\Win is the default location, you may have installed windows to say C:\Win instead, simply alter to match your labeling scheme. Now when your system boots up after its post and initial load Windows will start straight away.

Ahh PS. I forgot to note that you do not need to add any switchs to windows in the autoexec.bat file, however make sure you have a boot disk just incase you need to start windows in safe mode. Boot to the disk and then go to where ever windows is and type win /? for help, this will give you all safe mode switches. HTH

Win31 "safe mode switches"? Yes, of course

I'm pretty sure they're just "switches", since the concept of Safe Mode originated with 95

No need for a bootdisk to do that - where do these bizarre concepts come from? This must be the Win31 'mythology' forum

Oddly enough, this fellow has a hard time with Windows 98 too, and has developed the opinion that 98 is a faulty OS (although it's somewhat difficult to interpret the nature of the various difficulties)

I suspect the problem lies elsewhere.

Now he's hoping that Linux or XP will be 'easier'

good luck with that

We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

I've just goten used to calling it safe mode really but your right there just switches for troubleshooting purposes. But steppenwolf1 said he tried windows with the switches on or something along the lines of that when you don't need to at all. :P guess it's just me, goten used to call it safe mode because of 9x series. Also i agree with your last statement jboy :P

I'm at work, it's raining, I'm bored, & there's no action in the other forums so I decided to check out Win3.1. I see jboy has everything under control ;)

I used to love Win3.1...I resisted the change-over to Win95 as long as I could.

steppenwolf1, I have no idea what you did, but I recall your problems in the Win9x forum & I just discovered that you're now considering LinSpire?

http://www.computing.net/linux/wwwboard/forum/28795.html

All you had to do was add this line to the bottom of your autoexec.bat file:

C:\WINDOWS\WIN
