OK, as you can see from lower down, I bought an ISA modem only to find out it was a Winmodem. I have found software that may work (US Robotics say it should), I have com 3 available. Could some kind person give me step by step instructions on how to install the blighter? I have inserted the card in the ISA slot, I changed the com3 setting in 'Ports' to IRQ 5. Am i ready to run the software setup? I really don't know what I need to do first. I have tried installing winmodem software already, it caused a general protection fault so i uninstalled. I have installed wincim (some compuserve dialup thingy) as IE5 wouldn't work. Do i need to change/delete any files before i start? My soundcard hasn't been working properly since i tried the winmodem software.

Hi dave:
I'll give you my thoughts, first I would uninstall all the other software like compuserve & winmodem. Try downloading IE3, it's suppose to have a dialup setup included (from what I heard, I used 4 floppy disks from a ISP that I used years ago, but you will need to change the dialup password, e-mail address, dialup phone number, primary DNS & secondary DNS information for ISP that you are using to work. Then try it to see how it works before changing to IE5. I used netscape 4.08) Let me tell you that it's not easy to get Win 3.1 to work, plus you can only us can only use a 33.6 modem, the 56k modems are for Win 95 & later.
Try to set your port settings (comm port 2 ?) to hightest setting, inside of control pannel. If you need a internet install floppy, send me an e-mail, I will zip it & attach to reply, it might take some time to send all 4 disks.Good luck,
Z

Dave,
Don't try using a winmodem with a 486. The concept of a [low-cost] winmodem is that the CPU is used to handle most of the modem's work and therefore a noticeable drain on your system speed will occur. I wouldn't recommend using a winmodem on anything less than 200mhz. Try a hardware modem instead, even if its a 33.6 like a Newcom--I've used many of these in 386's and 486's. Of course there are many good brands out there and many hardware modems on the street with everyone upgrading to the latest technology stuff.
Good luck,
Kevin
