okay, i think somebody said in a thread either here or in DOS, that you could actually download files that allowed you to try and install windows 3.XX under FAT32 DOS 7.10. where are these files?

For standard MS-DOS 7.10 installed from its own installer, no any further files are needed, just install and run Win3.x from it. Try this link for more information:

Or you may read this page:

So, FAT32 and LBA are never a problem for Win3.x.

I used to recommend 3XSTART which is a patch for WinDOS 7.10 as supplied by Micro$oft (Still available on my PowerLoad Resource Pages) Wrengier version of MS-DOS 7.10 has this patched already along with other improvments.

As Wrengier says Win3x never really had any problems with FAT32 or LBA as the 'problem' was built into later versions of Windows 9x by Micro$oft in an attempt to kill off 3x!

oh, thanks. i must have seen it on mick's site instead. if you want to know what i'm trying to do, i'm going to have MSDOS7.1, Windows 3.1, and NTFS DOS pro on a single CD to load up. i guess it'll come in handy next time i remove an important file and have to wait for a long time just to fix it. (remember Dr Doog?)

<Jemuzu> Just what is it you cannot do with MS-DOS 7.10? What have you done to it or where did you download your copy from?

I think you are on a long path to nothing trying to enhance 6.22 for FAT32 & LBA support, as far as I know no-one has succeed 100% with that yet! And most users will say Why bother since 7.10 does it all for you!

Jemuzu might download MS-DOS 7.10 install disks long time ago, but there are many changes and improvements in the last a few months in response to the feedbacks and suggestions from users (e.g. via email and the new DOS forum). If so, try download again?

no, i tryed the iso from newdos.yginfo.net. it installed the whole /dos71 in chinese. i had to boot with a floppy i made right before i tried to do anything. then i copied the autoexec.bat and config.sys from my old dos 7.10 experiments near the end of summer and things worked fine. actually, the problem with the original start up was that i had set it to load something during the setup. but then i tried to install windows 3.10. restarted computer, typed WIN, either said wrong version of dos or just started and flashed the screen for a split second and then went totally black. the one problem is that i only have three floppies i can use and they're all important stuff for if i need to tweak the computer after installing. otherwise i'd try the floppy install.

You installed the Chinese add-ons for DOS from the CD ISO image??? That's why you saw Chinese stuff. Otherwise you will only see English. DO NOT install any add-ons in other languages for DOS (please answer "No" to the Add-On question).

"from my old dos 7.10 ... but then i tried to install windows 3.10. restarted computer, typed WIN, either said wrong version of dos or just started and flashed the screen for a split second and then went totally black."

Is that WinDOS or something? Unlike WinDOS, MS-DOS 7.10 installed from its installer will never show "wrong version of DOS" or similar.

Try install standalone MS-DOS 7.1 from its new *install disks* instead, without any add-ons inside.

"Error: unsupported data configuration" could mean the file network.drv in your Windows is damaged or wrong. Nothing to do with DOS itself.

Below is the Knowledge Base article about this (found via a Google search):

--------------------------

Error: Unsupported Data Configuration (due to damaged or wrong Netware.drv).

Error:

Unsupported Data Configuration.

Cause:

The Netware.drv file located in Windows\System is damaged or the wrong Netware.drv file is used with Novell VLM (Novell NetWare Shell version 4.0 and later). (Both Microsoft and Novell have a Netware.drv file.) This may occur when switching from Microsoft Client for NetWare to a Novell VLM client.

Solution:

Contact Novell Corporation to obtain the correct Netware.drv driver.

Those people using different DOSes have the same problem. So this may depend on the system configuration (both software and hardware).

You met that error message when you installed Win3.1 or started Win3.1? What configurations did you choose when you installed DOS? And what code page (e.g. 437, 850, etc) did you choose from the CP list while installing DOS?

Remove some programs & drivers from your CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT, and try again.

okay, i think when i first installed windows 3.1 for the VERY FIRST time on the machine it worked. i tried to change it to SVGA since my monitor is definetly not just a VGA. then after i restarted windows it messed up and i had to fix it in setup. after i had fixed it, it flashed the screen for one second and went back into DOS. that was when i first posted. i then did a repair install and got the error message. i set everything the way it was when it worked when repairing.

OK, so that is just a problem with display settings, since it did work fine for the first time. You need to use the correct driver for your Win3.x if you want SVGA or VESA instead of VGA.

So this is what you have really done before you saw that error message. you'd better say this a little earlier and clearer, as it worked fine at first, and that error only appeared after you did all these things, including changing to a wrong display setting and so on. Before your response, I did a completely fresh installation of MS-DOS 7.1 and Windows 3.1 with a on my system in order to see if I could reproduce your error, but it worked just fine, no problem at all. As some people in this forum said before, "It all depends on what you do with it! A basic install with a few programs (and correct settings) should last years."

Is that real? Last time someone in this forum said he could install WFW3.11 from neither DOS 6.22 nor DOS 7.1 in VMWare, as the system just hung after he started the WFW installation. Finally he found that's all caused by viruses in his own machine. After the viruses were killed, everything worked fine. Any virus, hardware problem or other problem with your system?

Windows 3.x "permanent swap file" will simply NOT work with FAT32 drives! See this Knowledge Base (KB) article for more information about this:

I think this partition manager is too old to support FAT32 & LBA drives or so. Try a newer and better one then if you would like to use a partition manager.

How about "Temporary swap file" then? This should work fine with FAT32, and with high performance as well.

Of course I know "32-bit access" won't work with "temporary swap file", but I don't think "32-bit access" is very useful anyway.. In addition, "32-bit access" can also work with "no swap file".
