Hi,
How do i get my Windows 3.1 (running in ms virtual PC 2004) to recognize my CD/DVD drive? Is there a generic driver to install?

I don't know how well it works in a VM, but what I usually do is copy the OAKCDROM.SYS file off of a Windows 98 boot disk to the C:\DOS directory (any directory will do).
Then you have to add the following line to your C:\CONFIG.SYS file.
DEVICE=C:\DOS\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:CDROMThen add the following to the C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file
C:\DOS\MSCDEX.exe /D:CDROMIf you're version of DOS is prior to 6.2, you might need to get a copy of MSCDEX.exe as well.
Once you reboot the machine, you should be able to use the CD-ROM drive.

Yes, you will be able to read CD-ROMS and use the drive for
its CD ROM function under Virtual Pc 2004, and either of the
methods above will work. I would with the method posted by
Maineh as it is the manual method you would use to mount
it on an old pc with dos and 3.1, and with virtual boxes, I like
to imagine if Im on the original machine, I dunno maybe its
just me.Reason I'm posting a follow up (they both did an excellent
job of answering your question) is that you mentioned it is a
CD/DVD drive. You will be able to read CD's, but not DVD's
... Windows 3.1 definitely doesn't support the DVD file
system. I don't see the DVD feature functioning. If you
somehow did get it to work, god bless ya, i would like to be
the first to know!Matthew R. Keegan
