Subject: How to conn. network from WFW3.11
OS: WfW 3.11
CPU/Ram: 486DX / 8 mb
Comment:

I am trying to connect my old laptop (Olivetti Echos 26c)to XP computer via switch. It has 486DX CPU, WFW 3.11 OS, MS-Dos 6.20, 342MB HD, 8 MB ram. No CD-rom. I bought PCMCIA-Ethernet Card, ethernet cables CAT5 and connected all via switch. I tried to install driver for PC-card, but it did not worked. Then noticed that TCP/IP does not exist in OS, then downloaded TCP32b, but still doesn't work.I can not ping to 127.0.0.1. I get this message back."Unable to contact IP driver, error code 0.". I don't know if it is possible to connect this box to network, and then maybe I can download some programs like Browser.
But I don't know what I do wrong.

If somebody can help me with this problem. I will be very happy. Many thanks from now on.

Does your Windows Xp machine have NetBEUI Protocol installed. Because you will need it. It is on the Xp installation CD.

Set up Win XP with Internet Connection Sharing that will install the DHCP server, you then need to change your WfW3.11 to be assigned an IP address automatically, it has worked for me after updating TCP32B and using IE4 or 5 (www.tucows.com 16bit version) could get on the net as well. You are on a peer to peer with crossover cable??

btw you do not need NETBEUI, it is an old protocol M$ is discarding, it is only included as an add-on for backward compatibility. TCP/IP always works (eventually) with XP connecting to OS/2 MSDOS6/7/8 NT4 NT5(W2K) Macintosh......

I tried many thinks. TCP/IP install is ok. But I can still not ping 127.0.0.1. I get the error: "Unable to contact IP driver, error code 0.".

How can I solve this problem? Anyone knows what this error means and how to solve?
The rest will work then.

If you set up the XP PC with internet connection sharing it will use the following:
192.168.0.1
255.255.255.000

Therefore set your other PC's to either assign automatically or use the 192.168.0.xx wuth the subnet 255.255.255.000

Advice would be to change IP address's!

IE5 16 bit here http://classic.tucows.com/preview/4842.html

I don't think I could walk anybody through a network setup, because each one seems to have it's own little challenges, but I have three computers with win98SE, winXP, and WFW networked with a switch and router to share my cable modem. So don't loose heart, it can be done. The single best site I found for windows networking is www.wown.com (World of Windows Networking). They have really great guides for how to network your systems together. Good Luck!!
