I am in a High Tech School learning computer programing, and was wondering if there is still a big number of people using Win 3.1
And why are these people still using it. ther has to be some benifit to not upgrading, unless it is the $$$$ situation.

I do. All I want is email, and to be able to look at most web pages. Why should I upgrade every year, just to make Bill Gates richer - he's got enough already. In fact websites that have loads of graphics and adds really piss me off, and I don't look at them if they are taking too long to download - there are plenty of other sites with the same information that I can look at. I'm running a 586 133Mhz, 64Ram, and have just upgraded to a 28.8 modem. It does all I need, and lets me put my webpage on.
Cheers

Win 3x and particularly Windows For Workgroups, still has a huge installed base. I have clients that still have entire offices comprising dozens of machines still using WFW and a WinNT 3.50 server. And with considerable efficiency, I might add.

Win 3.1X with DOS is extremely effecient when you compare it with hardware requirements of newer Operating Systems and GUIs.
You can stick DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.1 on a 40MB hard drive and the hard drive is not quite half used.
I have looked for statistics before of people using Win 3.1, MAC OS versions, Linux, etc., but have not found a site yet that posts that information.

Yeah, DR. I think only M$ could come up with accurate figures for Win 3x and I don't think they would really want to. I might note that often businesses throw money at inefficiencies in the form of new hardware and software, rather than train their staff to get the most out of what they already have. Of course, I'm one to talk. I doubt I have scratched the surface of the capabilities of M$ Office 4.50 or Corel Office 6.0, yet I have Office 2000 on the machine I use the most and I use Office 2K mostly for spell checking my HTML pages. What a moron. :-)

I use all or most OS. Of my eight machines I run Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1, Windows 95 (without all the extra added crap) does not take up that much space, OS2, & dos 6.22. I have yet to try Linux & am awaiting Beos that I ordered. After seeing some screenshots I was really impressed. But Windows 3.1 fits my needs perfectly for most common tasks. I also run Win98, but only because it was shipped to me when I ordered a new pc. I like Windows 3.1 & will continue to use it years from now.

I also use it. What i like about it is that it is easy to play in the ini files, unlike newer versions where everyting is much harder to access. And like other said before me, it suits my needs just fine. I can do everything interesting to do on the web, with an old machine that some would see as scrap. It just takes a little bit of ingenuity some times, and i like the challenge! And the "no money to put in all the time" aspect
of it is also appealing.Like, Laurie said, Gates is rich enough (although he is about to get quite a bit richer thanks to Bush's tax cut for the rich ). I put no more than $20 a month on it, and it gets me plenty. Also, beleive it or not, there are still programs beeing developped for it and for Dos. And most of them are freeware developped by enthousiasts!

I am new to win3.1 because I was just going to the library to do all my internet stuff and then was offered this free computer. I didn't know anything about win3.1 until a month ago and I like it. I am heartened to hear that there are others that are using it too. This computer is only a 386 but I have had pretty good results with the net. I am currently upping the browser to iexplore5 etc
Good luck.

IE5 on a 386??? Go for Opera3.60Webstats show that only a small percentage use Win3.1x, but the Web is far more useful to Win3.1x users than the PC magazines.

greetings Colin,
i agree totally with the other chefs that posted a responce 2 ur forum...
i got my start with computers about 3-4 yrs ago with a 386 systen running DOS 5 & win3.1...since then i have installed & upgraded many Operating Systems on multiple PCs 4 friends & customers...but 4 my own personal computing needs the only OSs that i use are win3.1 & win95...
the 386 win3x system that i mentioned earlier is still running smoothly...never crashed on me at all (can't say the same about my 2 win95 systems)...
also i must say, installing Calmira (win95 shell program) to win3x will turn any hater into the biggest fan of win3x...
novice 1

I have it as well....as to a similar story above..i got a computer for cheap....AND IM LOVIN IT!!!

i also agree i think win 3.1 is all you need the other os are just for money i think its great i run it on a 500 meg hard drive and never had problems plus it is much easier to maintain then win95 i had win 95 on two other system that let me down in about 5 months i built this computer and prefer win 3.1 and it dont take much space on the hard drive i am using a 38.8 modem and its great on the net this is all i need my sys is a 100 mhz 486 with 32 megs of ram its just fine

I have a box with Win 98 and Linux, another one with Win 3.1 and a third one with OS/2.
I worked for a British company with offices and stores worldwide. All their personal computers had Win 3.1 with Lotus for office duties. Their main system is AS/400e.
Everyone I know has machine a couple of generations old. Some of my friends even have Win 3.1 on their main system.

i hope ill use it,i have a 286 with 8 mhz!and
i hope ill get win 3.1 work on that s---.so all i can say if it worx, win 3.1 rulz.
