how do i get it to boot up with windows 3.1?

whenever i run autoexec.bat in dos so i can get windows to run i get the message "smartdive can't be loaded because the xms driver himem.sys is not loaded" it tells me to modify config.sys then it says "illegal option usage msdex" then it just lists off a bundh of code (\e\k\s\v) (\D:\driver...) (\l:letter) (\M: buffers)

edit autoexec.bat at c:\ prompt and once inside autoexec, type in "win" in a separate line under all the other lines of writing. This "win" will be read by autoexec.bat once you save and exit. Now reboot computer to see if you go straight to win 3.1 instead of dos version that you have.

"C:\windows" must also be in the path.

You should also edit your config.sys file to make sure your himem.exe is loaded. You should have a line reading: DEVICE=c:\dos\himem.exe

It's not himem.exe, but himem.sys, unless you have a REALLY old version of DOS (not 5.0)
