How do I get 256 colors and sound

Subject: How do I get 256 colors and sound
OS: win 3.1 / dos 6.22
CPU/Ram: 120mhz
Comment:
PC: NEC Ready 9532
Processor: 120mhz Pentium I
RAM: 64mb
OS: DOS 6.22 & win 3.1
Video Card: Chips SVGA or Packet Driver
Sound Card: Sound Blaster 16 or Packet Driver

I loaded Windows 3.1 on a Pentium I everything worked ok except I couldn’t get sound or 256 colors. I’ve tried everything I know to get it to work but it just wont work. I thought that the problem was that the hardware was newer than the software so I got a Chips SVGA Video Card and a Sound Blaster 16 sound card but the packet driver that is part of the motherboard and is connected to the mouse, keyboard, printer, speakers, joystick and monitor is taking precedence over the sound and video card I installed.

I just want to know how to get sound and 256 colors and I don’t care how.

Packet driver?

I'm guessing you've not looked for Windows 3.1 specific video and sound-card drivers:

Can I say it too?

Packet driver?

Yeah, aside from that - you need the Win31 drivers for your specific soundcard and video.

Neither should be too difficult - Soundblaster is practically generic, and probably your vidcard is Chips & Technologies (C&T)

A Packet Driver is what I call it when what would be separate chips are all rolled into one (I thought that was what it’s called) I think what I need to do is change the IRQ so the computer registers the new video driver.

Well I think the computer is recognizing the sound blaster but how do I tell win 3.1 to look for the video card on a different com port; I put the video driver in com 4.

You can use your own terminology if you like - just understand it's bound to be a source of confusion to nearly everyone else.

What you need to do is determine the make & model # of your sound and video cards, download and install their Win31 drivers. Period.

Syschk (DOS) might tell you a bit more about your system.

Sorry, but the rest of what you're saying is just not right - Win31 doesn't look for hardware, generally - you have to tell it.

The video card does not use comm port 4. Even if it is IRQ 4 that you mean, that is usually used bt comm port 3.

Packet drivers are usually used for networking under DOS, or CD writing under DOS.

I just looked up the nec ready 9532. It seems to have built-in sound and video.
You will have to disable these before adding other cards.

To disable onboard equipment (if possible) you would look for either the appropriate jumper on the motherboard or option in the CMOS setup.

Running Syschk (linked above) might assist you in determining your hardware - as would a manual.

-fred, any chance you have a link for that model?

jboy: Sorry no link, I just Googled "nec ready 9532". It appears that the model may have not been sold in the US. I got most of the info from postings in other forums. Problems - NEC = National Electrical Code 9532 = Standard relating to concrete.

Ok - pretty much all I could find were forum posts too, mentioning some of the features in passing (and the usual memory lists).

NEC doesn't seem to list the model either.

Ah well - the resources are out there. If the hardware can be ID'd it shouldn't be difficult to track down drivers.
Possibly even the onboard equipment is old enough that there'd be Win3xx drivers available.

Thinking - it's a habit.

For video, you might be able to use the generic SVGA driver (640x480x256 colors) from Microsoft (SVGA.EXE). That's assuming you are using Win 3.1 and not WfWG 3.11 (WfWG already has it built-in). It would at least beat 640x480x16 colors. Should be here:
