Subject: Hey Mark p, newdeal question
Comment:

After bit of searching found that NDO uses a standard Houghton-Mifflin dictionary file (IENC9123.DAT or IENC9121.DAT) that was supposedly used in some other dos and 3.1 spell checkers and wordprocessing programs. This is missing from evaluation edition. Any idea where to download it or what other freeware/abandonware programs use this file so as to save me downloading and checking out bunch of old software?

I dont really care about the missing filters to allow use of files from other word processors, but a functional spell checker would be nice as I want to use this independently on an old machine. I did find the update to version3.2 files but dont see that they made much difference, just took up more hardrive space or did I overlook some great benefit.

Appearently the the 3.2a update replaced core
NDO files to make NDO more stable and added some new filters and printer drivers.

Well done on finding the files. Was unaware that they where standard dos files goes to show you learn someting new everyday. Do they work ok?

Sorry I do not know of any other Dos programs but other forum users may know.

I found the name for the Houghton-Mifflin dictionary DAT files, I havent found the actual files yet. The name of the file was set by Houghton-Mifflin and sold on royalty basis to Geos or NewDeal or any other software makers wanting to use it in their dos or 3.1 programs. Viewed with a hex editor these files apparently identify themselves as copyrighted by Houghton-Mifflin. The royalty apparently was why NewDeal didnt include this file with the evaluation downloads. They would have had to pay a royalty to H-M everytime somebody downloaded a free evaluation copy of NDO. Logic would say it couldnt be much of a royalty though or I'd think software makers could just have come up with their own word list data files. cant think at all what would be so special about these proprietory word lists, but thats what NDO was designed to work with so thats what I have to find.
