Comment:

hi, can someone tell me if there is a 10/100 ethernet card for windows 3.1? I would also like to know if I can use a 10/100 ethernet card or adapter for an Upgrade Version of Win95. If none of the 2 are possible, can anyone tell me how my win3.1 machine can share a connection with win98 or a router? Can anyone direct me to the right 10/100 ethernet card for an old box with 3.1 OS. I'm on cable internet. Thanks for the help!

http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/3c905b/09-1365-000.pdf is a read me for the 3COM 905 TX 10/100 card and it states supports W3.1, though quite a few cards do. the real question should be can the software you are using take advantage of the faster throughput. If you are using Network Client 3 see www.wown.com or LanManager then it will request the NDIS2 driver, and I believe the software on the card handles the traffic, but not sure?

If your computer has pci slots there are still quite a few 10/100 manufactures that support win 3.x. I bought a d-link and even though it didn't say it on the box it had drivers for it on the disk. You really won't notice that much difference on internet if you use a 10 base nic only if you plan on transfering large files.

What Chad says about using a 10BaseT NIC on your Win 3.1 computer is true. I have some 3Com Etherlink III ISA NICs (3c509) on several of my computers and they are plenty fast here on my home network.

You can probably find 3Com Etherlink III ISA cards on EBAY or any computer store that has used parts. Other Ethernet NICs that I have used on older computers with success are Intel Ethernet Express, any NE2000 compatible NIC.

Most of the older cards have a DOS based setup program where you can change the IRQ and address range.

By the way, if you have the non-network version of Win 3.1, you will need to get the WFWG add-on or download the DOS based Networking files to make your Win 3.1 computer network compatible. The WFWG 3.11 add-on is a lot simpler than the DOS version.

Drivers for the 3c509/3c509b are available from 3com

Once you get a NIC maybe you could post back here for more help
