Windows 3.1x doesn't need a modem driver to work. Just specify the com-port.
You'll need a dial up tool/tcp-manager like:

-Trumpet Winsock 2b (my choice)

More simpel:
Just use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 for Windows 16 bit.
Its still available at www.tucows.com

Other 16 bit Browsers available:

-Netscape 4.08 (my choice)
-Internet Explorer 3.02
-AOL browser
-Opera (the fastest, but not freeware)

Look on LightSpeed's page. Get the FULL version that has the dialer built in.

http://www.geocities.com/yblightforme/lightspeed.html#Browsers

Get all the information you will need from your ISP.
1)Internet Username
2)Internet Password
3)Internet address; FillInTheBlank.com
4)Primary DNS server; something like the following 207.555.322.64
5)Alternate DNS server; also like 207.555.322.251
6)Dialup phone number
7)Email address (you may set this up after you are connected)
8)Email password (you may set this up after you are connected)
9)SMTP server
10)POP2 server

I may have missed one or two. After you install Internet Explorer Full version and reboot, you will click an icon to set up your account. The program will help you through.

Good Luck

You just squeak in for IE 3.02, though with your specs I would suggest the DOS Browser Arachne It has a built-in stack and dialer and it's minimum requirements, given that it's a fully graphical browser, are laughable

IE 3.02 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-------------------
This version is primarily intended for users of Microsoft(R) Windows(R)
3.1/3.11, Windows for Workgroups 3.1/3.11, and Windows NT(R) 3.51 who are
connected to a local area network (LAN) or who have existing Internet
connections (people who have an existing TCP/IP connection, a dialer, and an
account with an Internet service provider).

Note that this version is a 16-bit program and therefore you do not need
to have Win32s(R) installed on your computer.

This release includes Microsoft Windows 3.1 Virtual Machine (VM) for
Java(TM). It supports the same feature set available in Sun JDK 1.02.

- To run the browser only:
- 4 MB, 386 processor required; 8 MB, 386 recommended

- To run the browser and Java VM:
- 8 MB, 486 required; 12 MB, 486 recommended

- Microsoft Windows 3.1 or 3.11 or
Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.1 or 3.11
- A VGA monitor or better
- A mouse
- A 9600 BPS modem or a LAN connection
- TCP/IP Stack & Dialer, or configured connection for Windows NT 3.51

Hi yes the specs for Arachne are laughable.
But in my experience IE 3.02 in win3.x performed much better than Arachne.

I agree with Doofus that Arachne's requirements are really low! Heck, if your pocket calculator has a modem, it will likely work on it LOL! But i think you would do better with IE3 SP1, as it is much faster in handling images. Of course with your system's memory, you will have to make a custom install and leave out the Java VM, and if you are going to use webmail, like Yahoo mail (which i recommend) or Hotmail, i suggest you leave out Internet Mail as well. The IE3 browser is small and fast, and it will provide you with all you need to connect to the net. I think DR was pretty thorough in his descrition of what info you will need. You should set the jumpers on your ISA modem to COM2, IRQ3 (default on most modems), and the connection wizard of IE3 will take it from there. If you have any problems, you can post here for further instructions, or contact me through the link in my page. Good surfing!

I am also sort of in the same spot with trying to get connected to the internet. Although I first have to install my modem drivers, so I am kind of behind. Which version of IE is the one that includes them along with everything I would need. I have a 486dx 66mhz with 12mb of RAM, although Windows says I have 30mb.
I am curious as to what was mentioned above about knowing all your service provider information. Can I connect to my ISP with my current account, but on the computer running Windows 3.1? If so, that would make things so much easier for me.

IE 3.02 would be perfect for your machine. Sure, your current ISP dail-up account would be fine. Just make sure you have the service provider information described above handy as you will need to enter some or all of it during install. The info should have been provided on a sheet of paper when you first signed-up for your service. If you have lost the sheet, or your service uses DCHP (they didn't have to give you a sheet for Win 9x), just pop-down to the office and they'll be happy to give you one.
