SIGH!
http://www.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html
You will need to tick the box for 'download drivers and software' and enter the model in the 'for product' box, when you have done this click the the little arrow box at the side of the box.
This will take you to another page where it will quite likely list a whole range of models, this is where you choose you model. You hover the mouse over the correct model then double left click the mouse to open up the page which will have prompts.
okay well problem is the sticker that the product number was written on is ripped off :S here is some pics of the laptop if any1 could tell me an alternative
wait wait i figured out its contura Series 4/25. site is http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/Contura/us/locate/1_881.html so wat file do i download?

ya i have the same problem on a 3.1 laptop i have. that key you see at startup means the bios was locked and you need to type a password to continue. nothing shows up when you type your password (no *'s) but everything you type is still being inputed as a password.
i guess if you dont know the original password there's nothing you can do, but try going into setup and messing around a little

if the key is made of acsii characters and looks something like what i typed above (the website font distorts the key i typed a little), and is in the top left corner of the screen, it's asking for a password. if the key you see doesent look like that, forget what i said in the last post
