Help! I've lost my DOS Prompt!

I've been trying to install a CD-ROM drive onto my 486 computer, with no luck. I'm running on Windows 3.1. I've been in and out of the config.sys and autoexec.bat files changing things to try to make it work. I should have just left it alone because now when I re-boot my system I get a message saying that there is error on line 6 of config.sys and then it's like the computer freezes. I can't get to the C:\ prompt, I can't type anthing, ctrl-alt-dlt doesn't even work. Line 6 on config.sys says DEVICE=C:\COMMAND.COM C:\ /P /E:1024. I added this to config.sys because while trying to install the CD-ROM the checklist file said that if, when you type MSCDEX at the prompt, you get "Bad command or file name" you should add the above to your config.sys. Can anyone help get my DOS prompt back and help me install the CD-ROM?

use the machine you are using now to make a boot bisk. Really doesn't matter if it is for Win 9x or not. open note pad and type

Path C:\DOS

Choose file\save as and save as Autoexec.bat.
copy the newly created .bat file to the boot disk you've made. Start the computer with the problem using the boot disk. At the A:\ prompt type:
Edit C:\Autoexec.bat

I'm sure you can figure it out from there.

oh, geeze. I forgot about the CDROM. This has never failed me:CD.zip.

Copy the contents of the .ZIP file to a directory called CD on your C:\ drive:

MKDIR CD

There are .TXT files that contain the required lines for your Autoexec.bat and Config.sys. Make sure you get rid of any lines that refer to other CDROM drivers first.

Doofus, thanks for responding so quickly!
I've done what you said in your first reply, but I don't know what to do in the "Edit C:\Autoexec.bat" file. This is how my Autoexec.bat looks now:

C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.exe /X
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g
PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS
SET TEMP=C:\DOS

mscdinfo?

mscdinfo?

mscdinfo?
C:\DOS\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD001 /M:10

MSCDEX \D:MSCD220 /M:4 /L:S /V
mscdinfo?

The last 2 lines are repeated 4 more times.
I am unable to get into windows 3.1 still. At C:\ when I type win it says bad command or file name. Is there anything I need to add in the autoexec.bat to make it work? When I re-boot the system it tries to start Windows 95 (the system I'm using now is Win 95).

You're a life saver! I have Win 3.1 back and I've deleted the specified lines from autoexec and config. Now I'm going to try to install the cd-rom. I'm not sure I understand your instructions, but I'll try and see how I do. Thanks!

I've typed the required lines in the autoexec and config and when I re-boot the system it says:

Bad or missing C:\CD\OAKCDROM.SYS
Error in config.sys line 6

C:\>C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.exe /X
File not found.

What does this mean? (Sorry for being such a pest!) I really appreciate your help!
