HELP I HAVE Very old laptop and i cant get it to install windows 3.1

i have a 486 laptop wich somehow i messed up and lost the hard drive and when i boot it up it only says insert boot up disk or system disk someting like that HELP ME PLEASE!!!

You have to install win 3.1 on top of DOS. You can got to www.bootdisk.com and download a Win 3.1 or a DOS boot disk from there, but if you really messed up the hard drive, then re-install DOS 6.22 then Windows 3.1

Don't format! (Just in case you were going to...) With the first disk of the 6.22 set in the drive, after bootign, try using the command "sys c:" from the DOS prompt. This will load the boot files and command.com. Then reboot. If that fails, then do a full DOS install. First save your config.sys and autoexec.bat files so that you can restore them after DOS has reloaded and possibly overwritten them. Then reboot.
