I've got a 286 comp which had a perfectly OK HDD. It works on my 386 and I also noted its config from the CMOS autodetect. When I entered them in the 286 it always give a HDD/FDD controller failure. Also last time my 286 had crashed(for a long time) it cuz my mistake. I deleted the command.com and other such files. Anyway then I got a new 386 and after a while I put this HDD on it run scandisk, saved files, loaded it with command.com, so HDD is working but HDD controller failure? So what do i do?

Hi LightningLad:
Have you tried another ribbon cable (they can go bad), & ground yourself before working inside PC (static electricity can cause damage). Then remove the control board & clean contacts with some Isopropyl alcohol, bad contacts could be the problem. If PC still doesn't work, you might need another control board.

Good luck.
Z
