Subject: Hard drive doesn't work... OS: none CPU/Ram: IBM-PS2 286/15mhz
|
Comment: Hi I have an old IBM-PS2 working with a 286/15mhz processor. (and 1024kb of ram) My hard drive doesn't start. When I put power on, I can see the little orange light on it. So I know it's working, but this light stays open, and the computer can't see the hard drive. All I can do is try to have fun with the IBM Basic 1.0... How can I boot up the hard drive? And Is there a *basic* command to go on the a: or b: drive so i can boot up with a 3½ disk? Thankz

Reply: (edit)With your computer unplugged, unplug the ribbion from your hard drive and plug it back in making sure it is seated well. You can also do this with the other end of the ribbon where it plugs into the IDE connector on your motherboard. Booting your computer up with a floppy won't help the bios see the hard drive. Btw I've heard of people running win3x on a 286, but win2x was written for the machine and it's out there if you want it.

Reply: (edit)Hi, Depending on the model of the computer, (for example 8525 or 8530 or 8535) sounds as if your battery has gone dead. You need to go to IBM web site and find a reference disk to see if you can update your computer in order for it to recognize the harddrive. Extract the Reference disk to a formatted floppy before you try to run it. Most have a replaceable battery on a card inside the puter. http://members.tripod.com/~ps2page/ps2files/85xxref.htm
